transfer_creditTransfer Credit The transfer of credit from other institutions to the undergraduate program is guaranteed for students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and at least 60 credits from Mount Wachusett Community College, and William James College participates in the Massachusetts Transfer Guarantee (Massachusetts Independent College Transfer Guarantee (nebhe.org)) for students who complete an associate degree program at a Massachusetts Community College and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, also transferring the 34-credit block of general education courses. To preserve the integrity of graduate degrees awarded by the various College programs, each graduate program accepts transfer credits on a strictly limited basis and no more than 20% of the total credits for the program. Transfer of credit policies for each department are publicly available to prospective students on each department’s website, and in each department handbook.2026williamjames.edu
transfer_creditTo ensure the relevance of coursework to current standards and practices, courses are only accepted for transfer credit if they have been taken within the prior five years. Some programs have unique transfer of credit policies due to regulations by professional accrediting agencies. For example, the Clinical Psychology program does not accept transfer credit for courses that were taken entirely online. However, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, this policy was waived – with approval from the American Psychological Association so that courses taken online during the height of the pandemic would be accepted if they met all other transfer of credit criteria.2026williamjames.edu

transfer_creditTransfer of Credit Credits earned in graduate-level courses completed at an accredited institution 2 no more than 1F1F seven years prior to matriculation at William James College 3, for which a grade of "B" or better 4 2F2F 3F3F was awarded, are eligible for transfer to William James College. Said transfer credit may be applied to degree requirements subject to the following two provisions: • No more than 20 percent of the total credits comprising a student's degree program may be satisfied through transfer credit; however, various degree programs may establish policies that further govern transfer of credit. Credit for coursework in which a traditional letter grade is not recorded will not be considered for transfer unless the student can present compelling evidence that recorded grades are at least equivalent to "B" quality.2026williamjames.edu
transfer_credit• The determination of the actual acceptance and applicability of potentially eligible transfer credit is the responsibility of the appropriate Department Chair. • Transferred credits are counted as both attempted and earned credits for pace purposes in reviewing Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) (Refer to SAP policy). Procedure for Transfer of Credit • Students must submit a Transfer of Credit Petition (available in the student portal), course descriptions, and syllabi for each course to be considered for Transfer of Credit. • Transfer of Credit Petition must be submitted to the Registrar, and will not be accepted after the 1st year of student’s matriculation. In addition: Various degree programs in the college may establish policies that further limit the acceptability and application of transfer credit. The determination of the acceptance and applicability of potentially eligible transfer credit is the responsibility of the appropriate Department Chair.2026williamjames.edu
transfer_creditare subject to the limitation on total transfer credit described in the section, transfer of credits policies under the Policies and Consumer Information section. Advanced Standing Credit A program may grant advanced standing credit to applicants who have completed, or will have completed upon matriculation, a degree program that is substantially equivalent to a degree program that is a required prerequisite to the terminal degree for which the applicant is applying. Advanced standing credit is distinct from transfer of credit, and is subject to separate and independent conditions and credit limits.2026williamjames.edu

transfer_creditTransfer of credit Credits earned in undergraduate-level courses completed at another accredited institution2, may be eligible for transfer to William James College. Said transfer credit may be applied to degree requirements subject to the following provisions: 1. Course grades below a C will transfer if they are part of the Gen Ed Foundation and students have completed the block with a cumulative grade or quality point average of 2.0 or higher. 2. Students may additionally transfer a maximum of ten (10), three (3) credit additional content equivalent courses for a total of 30 credits beyond their 60 credits from an AS degree, thus only needing 30 credits at WJC to graduate. 3. Advanced Placement (AP), College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), MWCC Challenge Exams, and Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) credit completed and/or accepted by MWCC will be honored at WJC. Procedure for transfer of credit • An Official Transcript from all attended institutions is required and should be on file by the time the student attends Orientation.2026williamjames.edu

Students who have been accepted with Advanced Standing status are strongly encouraged to matriculate for the summer term following the acceptance of an offer of admission.2026williamjames.edu
transfer_creditE. Advanced Standing Advanced Standing is a formal status granted to newly matriculated students in a William James College PsyD program who enter with a previously completed master's degree in psychology or counseling that meets eligibility requirements. Students with Advanced Standing status enter the doctoral program with a concomitant reduction in the overall minimum number of credits required for the degree. Students admitted with Advanced Standing have the first year practicum waived (credits must be replaced with other coursework) and are eligible for up to 26 transfer-of-credit hours for external Advanced Standing and up to 30 transfer-of-credit hours for internal Advanced Standing from our Masters of Arts programs. The determination of acceptable course for transfer is based on our transfer of credit (TOC) policy (see section G below). Such courses will be entered on our transcript as transfer of credit. Eligibility and Maintenance of Advanced Standing Status To be eligible for Advanced Standing, the applicant’s master’s degree must have been granted by a regionally accredited institution, must have 60 or more credit hours documented on the transcript (which include 3 or more required core curriculum courses for the doctoral degree), and must have required supervised field experience effectively equivalent to our first year practicum requirement (640 hours or more). Only courses taught by faculty with doctoral-level degrees are eligible for transfer of credit toward our PsyD degree. Also, please note that some master’s degrees are not eligible for Advanced Standing status. Only students with demonstrated excellence in their prior program(s) will be granted Advanced Standing. Maintaining Advanced Standing status will be contingent upon establishing a record of academic achievement and good academic standing throughout the first year of our Clinical Doctoral Program. Students admitted with Advanced Standing must matriculate as full-time students and complete at least four years in the Doctoral Program at William James College. Program completion may extend beyond the four years of matriculation and must be completed within 7 years (to include the one year Advanced Standing equivalence.) Students admitted with Advanced Standing Status are not eligible to receive the en route Master's Degree in Professional Psychology offered in the Clinical Doctoral Program.2026williamjames.edu
transfer_creditApplication for Advanced Standing Request for Advanced Standing status is made at the time of application by completing the Advanced Standing section of the admissions application. If an interview is granted, applicants for Advanced Standing are asked to submit digital and/or printed copies of all MA-program course syllabi and an official MA- program transcript (if not already received) either in advance of the interview date or delivered on the day of the interview. If the applicant is offered admission, the department Chair and/or their faculty and staff designates will communicate to the applicant whether Advanced Standing status is granted and a list of courses that can be accepted for transfer. All syllabi and transcript materials must be received by March 15 th for the student to receive a report of Advanced Standing status prior to the uniform Acceptance Day (April 15th). Advanced Standing status will not be granted after this two-week period. F. Transfer of Credit (TOC) Students admitted to the Doctoral Program may apply for Transfer of Credit (see Student Academic Policies and Procedures – Transfer of Credit in the Graduate Student Handbook found here https:// www.williamjames.edu/students/policy-procedures/upload/wjc-graduate-student-handbook.pdf) Courses for which a student seeks transfer credit must: 1. have been taken at a regionally accredited institution 2. have been taken at the graduate level 3. have been taught by faculty instructors who have obtained Doctoral Degrees in a mental health related field 4. have been taken within 7 years of the student’s date of matriculation at WJC 5. have received a grade of B or better 6. meet the Discipline-Specific Knowledge or Profession-Wide Competency required content mastery assigned to the course in our curriculum 7. have been taken in-person or in a blended format, NOT fully online* *NOTE: Although it remains the Clinical PsyD program’s policy to not accept graduate-level courses taken online for transfer of credit, this policy may be waived for courses taken during the spring 2020, summer 2020, fall 2020, spring 2021, and summer 2021 semesters during the Covid-19 pandemic. Limitations 1. A maximum of 2 credits will be given for each course accepted for transfer (with the exception of those courses designated as equivalent to WJC 3 credit courses on transcript and syllabus review). 2. Transfer credit is limited to a maximum of 12 credits. This Policy is automatically waived for those students who are admitted to WJC with Advanced Standing, or other special admission status. 3. Transfer credit is limited to a combination of elective and required courses. 4. The following WJC Clinical Doctoral Program requirements cannot be met via transfer of credit: • CS706/CS707 – Clinical Practice I/II • CS900/CS905 – Clinical Seminar IV: Theory and Practice of Supervision and Consultation • PS801 – Ethics, Standards and Professional Practice • Field Placement • PR800/PR801/PR901/PR904 – Dissertation • RS525/RS535 – Research Transfer of Credit Procedure 1. Students must submit a Transfer of Credit Petition 152026williamjames.edu
transfer_credit(http://download.williamjames.edu/registrarforms/transfer-of-credit-petition-form.pdf ), and syllabi for each course to be considered for Transfer of Credit. 3. Transfer of Credit requests must be submitted to Hannah Spatafore, Academic Advisor, Clinical Psychology Department by May 30 of the year prior to matriculation. 4. Establishment of transfer of credit equivalence may require faculty review. 3. Incomplete courses will not be transferred into the Clinical Doctoral Program and will not be considered if course completion occurs after program matriculation. 4. WJC courses (at a maximum of 4 courses) taken prior to matriculation are included in and subject to the 12 Credit maximum for transfer of credit. Courses taken elsewhere while the student is enrolled at WJC 1. Courses taken at other accredited institutions while a student is enrolled at WJC will be eligible for transfer credit subject to the same rules as courses taken prior to matriculation at WJC. 2. Students must obtain prior approval of such courses for transfer of credit from the department and from the Registrar in accordance with the procedures outlined above. 4. Such courses will be included in the 12 credit maximum allowable for Transfer of Credit.2026williamjames.edu
prior_learningIn order to meet program requirements, students must declare their interest in the track by October 1st of their second year of the program (Advanced standing students must declare their interest no later October 1st of their first year.) This will allow students accepted to the concentration to apply for a health psychology-focused advanced practicum for Year 3. Students must fill out the Declaration of Concentration form and submit it to the Registrar.2026williamjames.edu
prior_learningApplications begin in the fall of year 2 (or year 1 for advanced standing students) with the understanding that the student will be seeking forensically-related field education training in their third year.2026williamjames.edu
transfer_credit2. Transfer of Credit for Field Experience In keeping with the College’s philosophy that field experience and coursework should be integrated, there is no transfer of credit for previous field placement experience except in the case of students entering with Advanced Standing.2026williamjames.edu
transfer_creditC. Time Frame for Earning Degree Students are required to do a minimum of five (5) years of study at WJC; the program cannot be completed in less than five (5) years unless a student entered the program in a “special admissions” status (e.g., Advanced Standing, Transfer, etc.) Some students may be required to do more than five (5) years of study.2026williamjames.edu
transfer_creditStudents accepted into the Clinical PsyD program from our counseling program are granted advanced standing status and are able to transfer a number of credits if they join that program within 5 years of graduation from the MA CMHC program.2026williamjames.edu
transfer_creditTRANSFER OF CREDIT INTO THE M.A. IN PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM Up to six (6) credits of highly equivalent graduate coursework may be transferred into the M.A. Students requesting transfer credit must provide the documentation required by William James College, which may include an official transcript, course syllabus, and Transfer of Credit Petition.2026williamjames.edu
transfer_creditF. Transfer of Credit Up to 20 percent of the total credits for the degree may be transferred in and credited towards the degree. Therefore, students admitted to the MA/CAGS program may transfer in up to 13 credits, and students admitted to the MA/CAGS/PsyD program may transfer in up to 23 credits. To qualify for transfer of credit, the prior coursework must be equivalent to required courses in the MA/CAGS program.2026williamjames.edu
transfer_creditStudents who are admitted with advanced standing may receive credit for higher amounts of prior coursework. Please refer to Section XII.B for the policy regarding admission with advanced standing. G. Substitution of Course Requirements On the basis of a student’s prior academic experience (including, but not limited to recognition of knowledge/skill acquired in previously completed courses which may not be eligible for transfer credit), the School Psychology Department Chair may substitute one or more required courses, and then designate a suitable curriculum replacement(s) or allow for free electives to allow the student to make up the credit requirements.2026williamjames.edu
prior_learningB. Application for Advanced Standing Advanced standing is a formal status granted to a School Psychology MA/CAGS student who already has a MA degree in school psychology or a related field, and enters the Program at the CAGS level. The qualifications listed in Section III.A are used to evaluate the merits of an application for advanced standing. Applicants who are offered admission with advanced standing to the School Psychology MA/CAGS Program have the opportunity to submit documentation to determine what prior coursework and experience will be approved to meet program requirements (see instructions, Appendix 2). Admitted applicants do so by completing an Advanced Standing Credit form for each course for which advanced standing credit is sought (see sample, Appendix 3). The advanced standing application is reviewed by the program faculty, with four possible outcomes for each course under consideration: 1. A course is accepted toward advanced standing, with a concomitant reduction in the overall minimum number of credits required for the degree. 2. A course is conditionally accepted toward advanced standing, contingent upon the applicant subsequently demonstrating attainment of the program competencies addressed by the given course. 4. No advanced standing credit or waiver is granted. Upon entering the Program, students keep track of completed and projected coursework using the Course Audit form (Appendix 4). A separate form, Conditional Advanced Standing Credit Audit (Appendix 5), is used to track supplemental activities that must be completed as a condition for receiving advanced standing credit. 1. Definitions A. Advanced standing Advanced standing is a formal status granted to a School Psychology MA/CAGS student who enters the Program at the CAGS level.2026williamjames.edu
prior_learningB. Advanced Standing Credit Advanced standing credit is credit toward meeting program requirements that is granted for satisfactory completion of a graduate course at another accredited institution prior to matriculation. To qualify for advanced standing credit, the course must be deemed equivalent in content and level of instruction to a course in the School Psychology MA/CAGS Program (i.e., listed in Table 1 or 2, pp. 5-6), as determined by the program faculty. Students admitted with advanced standing enter the Program with a concomitant reduction in the overall minimum number of credits required for the degree. 2. Policy A. Prior Notification Prior to the decision date for accepting or declining the offer of admission, applicants are provided with an initial determination of the faculty review of their advanced standing application, indicating the projected advanced standing credits and course waivers that will be granted. B. Advanced Standing Credit Consideration for advanced standing credit is limited to graduate level courses completed at another accredited institution for which a grade of B or better (not B-) was awarded. Courses completed within the past 5 years will receive full consideration for advanced standing credit. Applicants may, however, submit documentation of courses taken more than 5 years prior to matriculation, as advanced standing credit may be considered under the conditions described below. Graduate coursework that is proposed for advanced standing credit must be recognized as meeting licensure or accreditation standards, where applicable. No more than 30 credits that comprise a student’s degree program may be satisfied through advanced standing credit.2026williamjames.edu
prior_learningThese requirements and their satisfactory completion are documented by the faculty member on the respective Advanced Standing Credit Form. Therefore, the overall CAGS degree program for advanced standing students may significantly exceed the 36 credit minimum. 3. Application Procedure Applicants must submit the Advanced Standing Credit Form (course information, syllabus, and corresponding transcript) specific to each course that is being considered (see sample, Appendix 3). Materials submitted by applicants will be reviewed by faculty members, who make a recommendation to the program director. The decision to grant advanced standing credit or course waiver resides with the program director and is not subject to appeal. If a decision cannot be made based on the applicant's submitted documentation for advanced standing credit, further information may be requested of the applicant. 4. Timeline Timelines for submitting advanced standing materials and for faculty review and notification are provided to applicants each year. As a general rule, individuals who are offered admission to the Program may submit the advanced standing credit application packet only after receiving the admission offer.2026williamjames.edu
prior_learningAppendix 2. Advanced Standing Application Instructions School Psychology MA/CAGS Program ADVANCED STANDING APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS 1. The applicant completes a course-specific Advanced Standing Credit form and provides related documentation for each course for which advanced standing credit or course waiver is being requested. Each form must be accompanied by the course syllabus in order to receive full consideration for advanced standing credit. 2. Advanced standing credit is considered only for graduate level coursework in which the applicant attained a grade of B or higher. 3. In determining whether to request advanced standing credit for a previous graduate level course, the applicant should refer to the School Psychology MA/CAGS Program course syllabus (available from the Program Director), noting the course description, competencies, weekly topics, and assignments. As more than one course may be applicable, multiple courses may be listed on the Advanced Standing Credit form. The amount of advanced standing credit granted cannot exceed the number of previously earned graduate credits. However, the document must (a) include a table of contents and tabs for each worksheet submitted, and (b) transcripts for all graduate coursework proposed to advanced standing credit (a copy is acceptable). Newton, MA 02459 Robyn_Bratica@williamjames.edu Please address any questions about the application for advanced standing credit to Dr. Robyn Bratica at the email address above.2026williamjames.edu

Transfer of Credit: MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (On Campus)transfer_creditTransfer of Credit: MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (On Campus) Up to 12 credits of highly equivalent graduate coursework may be transferred in and credited towards program requirements. The determination of coursework equivalence is made by the program director in consultation with faculty members. Transfer credit applies to classroom coursework only; in keeping with our institutional philosophy that coursework and field work should be integrated, there is no transfer credit for previous fieldwork experience. Generally speaking, there are three circumstances under which requests to transfer credits will be considered: The student wishes to transfer graduate-level courses taken previously at another institution that are deemed to be the equivalent of courses taught in the Master's Program at William James College. The student wishes to transfer courses taken previously at William James College as a non-matriculated student. The student wishes to transfer courses taken at another institution while s/he was matriculated in the Program at William James College (this will ordinarily be restricted to electives and with previous authorization by the Department Chair). All requests for transfer of credits must be reviewed and approved by the Department Chair and Registrar. Before such requests are granted, students will be asked to provide documentation that the courses they completed elsewhere are the equivalent of those offered at William James College. Such documentation may include (but may not be limited to) course syllabi, transcripts, and letters from instructors. It will be the responsibility of the individual student to provide such materials as requested. You may submit the following form for each course you wish to have considered for transfer only if/when you have been offered admission to the program. Although the primary goal is to prepare master's level counselors, this program will also provide students with some of the necessary foundations for pursuing further graduate study, including the doctoral programs at William James College. Clinical Mental Health Counseling MA program graduates may be eligible for Advanced Standing in Clinical Psychology PsyD Program. Transfer of Credit: PsyD in Leadership Psychologytransfer_creditTransfer of Credit: PsyD in Leadership Psychology The Leadership Psychology PsyD is a 98-credit, 4-6 year program. Admission requires that the applicant already possess a 30-credit equivalent master’s degree from an accredited institution, leaving 68 credits to complete at William James College. Prior master’s degrees may be in any field from an accredited institution. If a student has attended another doctoral program and the syllabi match courses in this program that have been completed in the last seven years, up to 12 credits may be accepted upon approval of the Program Director. If you have any questions, please contact the Program Director, Dr. Suzanne Devlin, at suzanne_devlin@williamjames.edu . You may submit this form for each course you wish to have considered for transfer only if/when you have been offered admission to the program.2026williamjames.edu
Transfer of Creditstransfer_creditTransfer of Credits No more than 20 percent of the total credits comprising a student's degree program may be satisfied through transfer credit; however, various degree programs may establish policies that further limit the acceptability and application of transfer credit. Transfer of highly equivalent graduate coursework at other institutions may be accepted with faculty approval. The determination of coursework equivalence is made by the program director, in consultation with faculty members. Please refer to specific policies for your program of interest in the Transfer of Credit section on the Admissions page of that program.2026williamjames.edu
