Description
// Overview Curriculum Concentrations Roadmap Minors Courses Chair: Howard Stanger, PhD Introduction Every organization includes individuals whose job is to coordinate and integrate the activities of employees, manage operations, and lead the organization successfully into the future. These individuals are called managers. Management is the art and science of getting things done efficiently and effectively through people and other organizational resources. Effective management is critical to the success of organizations of all sizes--from entrepreneurial startups to large, multinational corporations-and types-for-profit and nonprofit. Managers focus on accomplishing organizational objectives through the coordination of people and other resources and involve the key subprocesses of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Some important managerial activities include planning, strategy, and decision-making; facilitating groups and teams; leading and motivating employees; and managing operations and supply chains. Today’s managers face the task of leading their companies in a highly competitive global marketplace by managing processes and people to create goods and services that add value for their customers. Increasingly, managers must also focus on ethics and how their decisions impact profits, people, and the planet. The management major at Canisius prepares students for a variety of roles in businesses and other organizations of all sizes. The program and management-related courses are designed to give students insight into human behavior, develop their understanding of organizational issues and processes, and teach them how to analyze information, make decisions, and implement solutions. Management Major The Management major provides students with a balanced education to prepare them for a variety of important organizational roles. The curriculum includes basic coursework in quantitative analytical methods, operations management, behavioral science and human resource management and strategic management. Advisement All students should have an advisor in the major and should contact the department directly to have an advisor assigned if they do not already have one. Meetings with academic advisors are required prior to students receiving their PIN for course registration each semester. All majors should work closely with their advisor in discussing career expectations, choosing their major electives, developing their entire academic program and planning their co-curricular or supplemental academic experiences. Double Majors Students who wish to expand their educational opportunities may decide to declare a double major. This decision may be based on career goals, planned graduate studies, and/or other student interests. Before a student declares a double major, it is important to meet with the appropriate academic departments for advisement. In order to declare a double major, the student must complete the Major/Minor Declaration form. This form will be submitted electronically and reviewed and approved by each department chairperson as well as the appropriate associate dean. Per university policy, each additional major requires a minimum of 15 credits that do not apply to the student's first or subsequent major. Some double major combinations can be completed within the minimum 120 credit hour degree requirement, but in other cases, additional coursework may be required. Please note that students will only receive one degree unless completing the dual degree requirement, including at least 150 undergraduate credit hours, regardless of the number of majors they complete. Both (all) majors appear on a student’s transcript. Major Experiences The management major is designed to give students a breadth of knowledge in a variety of business functions as well as a depth of understanding in operations management and organizational behavior and human resource management. Management electives can be used by students to pursue specific topics based on their interests or career aspirations. Management majors are also strongly encouraged to complete internships (either for credit or not for credit). Minors in Other Disciplines Minors provide students the opportunity to pursue additional interests but generally do not require as many courses as a major. Minors generally range from five to eight required courses. To receive a minor, the student must complete at least 9 credit hours of coursework distinct from their other credentials (i.e., majors, other minors). The complete list of minors is available on the Canisius website and in the catalog and provides links to each minor. Some majors and minors can be completed within the minimum 120 credit hour degree requirement, but in some cases additional coursework may be required. Students must complete the appropriate minor request form. Pass-Fail Rules Courses required to be taken for majors and minors in the Wehle Business School are not eligible to be take pass-fail. This includes all business core courses and all
