The fashion studies minor is an interdisciplinary area of study that considers fashion through a broad lens which combines cultural study with business and design. Fashion is a critical corridor for understanding expressivity, adornment, image making, consumption, and systems of social meaning. As a site of cultural transmission and definition, fashion has profound implication for the planet on local, transnational, and even environmental scales. The versatility of this minor provides students with an overview of the field in the broadest sense from idea to production and distribution, from creativity to industries of retail and communications. Because of New York City’s standing in the industry, this minor affords students a liberal arts atmosphere as they comprehend the meaning of dress for a rapidly changing 21st-century world.
