- The American Studies minor is an interdisciplinary program that investigates the nuances and complexities of American history, culture, politics, and identity. This program explores what it means to call oneself “American” and how that identity is often as shifting and amorphous as the boundaries and borders of America itself. Students in the program may take courses in History, Literature, Film, Religion, Communication, Music, Fine Arts, Philosophy, Theater, and Political Science. We contrast powerful American dreams with American realities—past and present; we explore cross-cultural, transnational, multi-ethnic and racial definitions and experiences of American identity; and we invite students to travel not only within the geographic borders of America, but also to explore imaginative representations of America which push against those borders. Students will study a variety of cultural artifacts and expressions, from the poetry of Emily Dickinson, to the music of Muddy Waters, to the novels of Toni Morrison, to the films of Martin Scorsese, or the latest iteration of Grand Theft Auto. As they explore the tensions between “high” culture and popular culture, students will also discuss the ways in which issues of race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender are represented in these various texts. Finally, as students negotiate contested identities and issues, as they wade through the troubled waters of American history, they will develop the inherent, necessary connections between civil discourse and citizenship.
