Description: As the world becomes more complex and interconnected, the ability to understand, visualize, and solve problems through a spatial lens is increasingly essential. The geographic information systems (GIS) immersion introduces students to modern spatial problem solving through an interdisciplinary mix of digital mapping, geospatial reasoning, computational, and AI methods. Students build strong technical skills using a variety of tools—rather than any single GIS application—while developing spatial thinking, digital cartography, geographic visualization, spatial algorithms, programming fundamentals, data modeling, statistics, imaging science concepts, and emerging approaches in geospatial AI. The immersion emphasizes applying geospatial and computational techniques to real-world challenges, enabling students from any major to interpret complex data, think critically about place and space, and use geospatial technologies as flexible, powerful problem-solving tools.
