American Studies, B.A.

SUNY Old Westbury · Old Westbury, NY

A checklist is the list of requirements to complete this program and receive the award, as the college publishes it in its catalog. It is the same for everyone. It does not say what you have completed; that comes from applying your own record.

Description
American Studies is an interdisciplinary liberal arts major. Courses in the program explore U.S. history, culture, social and economic structure, forms of cultural expression, and political and legal institutions. Students learn to integrate history, sociology, literature, and media studies and develop skills in critical thinking, debate, and clear expository writing. Courses emphasize the diversity of American Society and the experiences of ordinary life; racial, ethnic, gender, and other forms of social inequality; institutions of power and control; and the ways people attempt to change society.
