At MCPHS, we understand the importance of hands-on experience and are committed to providing our students with real-world experiences in their chosen fields. Programs with clinical placement components already require experiential learning as part of their program’s curriculum. Non-clinical programs provide the opportunity for internships, research assistantships, field placements, independent study, and work-study. Many non-clinical programs require these learning experiences as part of the curriculum. This commitment is not just a promise but part of our Strategic Priorities of Student Success and Student Experience.
The Center for Research and Discovery provides opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies students across all MCPHS campuses. The Center is a hub of innovation and collaboration, providing opportunities for students to team up with faculty to conduct research in a variety of areas. Using the online catalog, students can explore research subjects and connect with faculty members who are interested in working with students to set up collaborations. The CRD also holds an annual research conference to showcase student research.
In these two programs, choose from either a pathway to earn a combined Bachelor of Science in Premedical Health Studies from MCPHS’s Boston campus and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), or a pathway to earn a combined Bachelor of Science in Premedical Health Studies from MCPHS’s Boston campus and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from A.T. Still University (ATSU).
All NESA graduates are eligible to sit for the National Certification Board for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (NCBAHM) board exams, which are required to practice in most states, including Massachusetts. An NCBAHM Preparation session is offered to students in the last year of the NESA programs to prepare students for the exams and the application process. The NCBAHM provides information on the exams, the certification process and the certification requirements state-by-state.
A residency program is a post-professional planned learning experience comprised of a curriculum encompassing the essential knowledge, skills, and responsibilities of an advanced physical therapist within a defined area of practice. When board certification exists through the American Board of Physical Therapist Specialties for that specialty, the residency program prepares the physical therapist with the requisite knowledge and skill set needed to pass the certification examination following graduation. ABPTRFE currently accredits clinical physical therapist residency programs in the following areas:
Each MCPHS online program offers clinical and non-clinical experiences that include rotations, internships, field placements, research projects, and more, both in the U.S. and around the globe. This real-world learning is immediately actionable and can be applied in the student's workplace. For example, as part of their program, students often complete a capstone project specific to their current company and full-time role.
The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in student education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception that permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to appropriate parties in connection with a health or safety emergency. Another exception that permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the University in an administrative, supervisory, academic or research, or support staff position (including law enforcement unit personnel and health staff); a person or company with whom the University has contracted (such as an attorney, auditor, or collection agent); a person serving on the Board of Trustees; or a student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review a student education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility. Upon request, the University may disclose student education records without consent to officials of another school in which a student seeks or intends to enroll if the disclosure is for purposes related to the student’s enrollment or transfer. Education records may be compelled and disclosed without consent by, or notice to, the student pursuant to a valid subpoena issued under the USA Patriot Act. Finally, personally identifiable “directory information” may be released freely unless the student files the appropriate form requesting that such information not be released. This form is available at the Office of the Registrar. Directory information includes the following:

Graduate and professional schools often require a written statement as part of the application process. Some require specific information while others use an unstructured format that allows the applicant to determine the focus. Schools/programs will ask you to submit a one- or two-page document (sometimes with a character limit) in an essay format, rather than a business letter format (which reflects a key difference between a personal statement and a letter of intent). Personal statements include several paragraphs about experiences and interests that led you to pursuing a professional field, how the organization’s focus will help you achieve your personal and professional goals, how your skills and experiences have prepared you to succeed in the program, and how the program fits with your long-term professional goals.

The Provost's Office will respond in writing (letter or email) to you with a decision about your appeal. The University certifies candidates to sit for the national qualifying examination for the profession prior to graduation. Candidates for licensure must then apply for licensure to the specific state board where they wish to practice and have their national test score sent to that board of licensure.

The University recognizes there are situations when a student may require a leave of absence (LOA). Such leaves are granted for a maximum of one academic year with the exception of leaves granted for military service. The student must meet to consult with their Academic Dean or designee regarding the reason(s) for considering, and the ramifications of, taking a leave of absence. After the initial meeting with the Academic Dean or designee, the student must return the completed Leave of Absence form within 1 week (or 5 business days). Students who take a leave after the designated add/drop period will receive course grade(s) of W. * For information on a Health/Medical Leave of Absence, please see the Health/Medical Leave of Absence section in the University Catalog.
The dean’s list recognizes full-time students seeking a bachelor’s degree or doctor of pharmacy who have completed the required full-time credit hours of credit and earn a minimum 3.50 semester GPA. Courses that are taken pass/fail do not count toward the full-time status. Doctor of Pharmacy students in Boston, Worcester, and Manchester who are completing clinical rotations are not eligible for the dean’s list. Doctor of Pharmacy students in the Worcester and Manchester programs during the six week fall semester of Year II are eligible for the dean’s list.

Being that the W/M CASE department services students in accelerated graduate and post-baccalaureate programs, we do not approach academic advisement in the traditional sense. These programs are lockstep, therefore the courses required for graduation purposes are pre-determined for each academic department, and the CASE staff do not have the authorization to make any changes to these programs. CASE academic coaches on the Worcester and Manchester campuses approach advising with a holistic coaching lens, helping to guide students through their academic journeys.
A lecture period of 50 minutes per week or laboratory work of 110 to 220 minutes per week, extending over one semester, constitutes one academic credit hour. For each hour of lecture, students are expected to spend a minimum of two hours outside of class preparing for the course. For research, clinical/experiential rotations and service learning activities, actual hours may vary by program, but such activities must include an amount of work that is at least equivalent to lecture and laboratory courses.

LinkedIn is an online professional networking site that offers significant career exploration benefits by making your professional background widely visible. Think of your LinkedIn profile as “a resume that never sleeps.” Employment recruiters, hiring managers, and others use LinkedIn to enhance their efforts to identify the best talent. LinkedIn allows you to be found by an employer, to search for a job, and to identify contacts that may help you build a network of colleagues. Your profile is the most basic feature of LinkedIn; it allows you to put a face to your name through a profile photo, and to publicize your credentials and other qualifications of interest to potential employers and professional contacts, such as your name, where you earned your degree, where you work now and have worked in the past, and your accomplishments.
Internships and volunteer positions often require a resume. Although some positions may require only an online application form, others require a resume. If a company/organization does not require a resume at the time you apply, bringing a resume to an interview will make a good impression. Resumes may also be needed for leadership and other positions at MCPHS.
Big Interview is a free training system that helps you prepare more effectively for an interview. This easy to use online system combines training AND practice to help improve your interview technique and build your confidence.
In this situation you will be having a meal with one or more members of the office. Although you are in a less formal setting, you are still interviewing. The hiring manager would like to see if you socially fit in the team. It is important to be aware of body language, stories or discussions that are inappropriate, and don’t drink alcohol, even if the interviewers are drinking.
Questions about your application and how to fill it out should be directed to the respective Board of Pharmacy, not the Registrar’s Office. . They will be processing your applications and are thus the most accurate source for information about application completion.

This is one of the most important questions that you will be asked, and you need to make sure that you have a very good answer. Try to be as specific as possible. Explain in detail: why you would make a good employee, why you are the right fit for the job, and what sets you apart from other applicants. Point out your achievements, accomplishments, and applicable experience.

A letter of intent is a document that expresses your interest in completing a specific program, such as a residency or fellowship. Its differs from a cover letter in that it focuses on how the residency will help you develop as a professional, whereas a cover letter focuses on existing training, skills, and experience that will benefit an organization.
Accomplishment statements are an important means of communicating the actions you took and the results that came from them. These simple statements serve as evidence of the value you brought to a role or experience. When describing your experience on your resume, avoid listing your responsibilities; instead, use the following suggestions to highlight your accomplishments.
The New England Regional Residency and Fellowship Showcase, held annually in the fall at the MCPHS Boston campus, offers a comprehensive overview of residency and fellowship opportunities, including industry roles. The event features a review of the ASHP Midyear process, with a focus on the Personnel Placement Service (PPS), as well as a discussion of the MCPHS internal Fluid Review Application Portal. Attendees also have the opportunity to network with current fellows and key stakeholders from companies participating in the Fellowship and Residency program.
The color of your backdrop can also help determine what to wear for a virtual interview. If possible, sit in front of a blank background, so that you remain the focal point. If your house is void of empty walls, set up in your home office or living room-whichever area looks the most businesslike. Always make sure the space is clean before embarking on a video call; the messier the background, the harder it is to convince a hiring manager of how detail-oriented and organized you are as an employee. Lastly, check your lighting. Sitting near a window works best, as the best way not to appear washed out is to keep the light in front of you. It is important to test the lighting before your interview.
If you complete paid intern hours in Massachusetts, you must register your supervising pharmacist (preceptor) by having them fill out Section F of your Intern application or Form C if you have already received your intern card. You may have multiple preceptors during your time working as a paid intern . Each time you complete intern hours or work in one place for more than three months, submit Form B to officially log your hours with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy. These will be used for licensing when you graduate. Form B and Form C are found on the Health Professions Licensing application.
Some ATSs can even evaluate context, so be sure to integrate keywords and phrases naturally throughout your resume. For example, rather than only listing “management” in a Skills section, provide context for that skill in your Work Experience section (e.g., “Managed a team of five executive board members”). (Note: The human who eventually sees your resume will want to know how your accomplishments are unique to YOU, and providing context on how you used a skill and what the results were is very important.)
Faculty mentors are part of your MAC team and are a great resource for you to utilize during your academic career at MCPHS. They teach an array of courses and labs in multiple disciplines, and can provide you with information regarding your future profession. Faculty mentors can also assist students with broad-based curriculum questions, career exploration, graduate and continuing education, an understanding of professionalism, and general advice regarding your field of study. The CASE offers faculty mentor hours on a weekly basis during the fall and spring semesters. You can set up an appointment by stopping by the CASE and signing up.

Below is a list of common section headings. Sections may be added to highlight your unique experience as you align your strengths, skills, and accomplishments to the needs of your potential employer. Note: These sections are “movable” and can be placed in a different order depending on a person’s professional experience. All of the headings might not be used.
Professional headshots are a type of portrait photography typically used for LinkedIn and websites. According to LinkedIn, profiles with headshots get 21 times more views than those without a photo. Additionally, a professional headshot doesn't require a professional photographer. Oftentimes, a friend with a camera or cellphone can take just as great of a photo.
The following phrases may help you to organize your accomplishment statements for both resumes and employment correspondence. When choosing the phrase that best describes the situation, read it over once or twice in the context of your sentence to be certain that the selection is correct and that the phrase reads well.
Location - Are you able and/or willing to move? Relocating can often lead to higher salaries and more opportunities. Larger companies often have various locations throughout the country and will relocate their employees. However, it is important to consider if you will enjoy living in the location of your new job. In considering a new area, you may want to investigate aspects such as weather, culture and entertainment, population, and estimated cost of living. Read the city’s newspaper and/or website. Finally, it is important to visit the city or town prior to accepting a job offer.
"Hi, I'm Susan Jones- it’s so nice to meet you. I've recently completed my BSN at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences and was fortunate enough to complete a preceptorship in an Emergency & ICU setting. While in nursing school I was employed as a licensed nursing assistant and gained valuable patient care experience. On campus, I had a leadership position as President of the Student Nurses Association- I was known for my organizational skills as well as my ability to bring students together to share best practices preparing for the nursing profession. Two of my strengths are a keen attention to detail and the ability to easily build relationships with my patients. I’m interested in this new graduate residency program that focuses on critical care and am confident I can make some positive contributions.”
Think about volunteering with the population you want to work with. For example, are you interested in working with pediatric patients? Volunteer to work with young children to gain an understanding of early childhood development. Interested in researching new treatments for diabetes? Volunteer with the American Diabetes Association to learn more about the disease. Important: Ensure that your volunteer experience is not a role within your field, because that might be considered an internship. For additional questions, contact MCPHS Immigration and International Support Services.
“To make the application process easier, start your letter of intent before Midyear, and fill in the specifics after Midyear. Try to send in your application within a few days of getting back from the conference. Be very familiar with your CV and experiences. If it is on your CV, then it is fair game to ask in an interview. During Midyear candidates go on many interviews over the course of a few days, so it is important to be as concise and memorable as possible without standing out for the wrong reasons. Be able to provide your answer to the interview question in the right amount of detail. Practicing with friends, preceptors, and mentors prior to Midyear can make you more comfortable talking about yourself. However, do not memorize the answers because this can come off as being too scripted and not candid enough. Also, it is important to prepare questions to ask the interviewers because there often time at the end of the interview dedicated to your questions.”
Although letters of recommendation are not usually needed at midyear, have a typed list of references available. This list should include your contact information at the top (formatted the same as your CV/resume) and the name, title, company, email address, and phone number of each reference.

“Be prepared and look at deadline dates early on! Make sure you send in your transcript ASAP, even if it does not have your fall grades. Send it a second time after grades are submitted, this way you know you have something on PhORCAS. Being the holiday season, there are many days when offices will be shut down. In regards to your references, notify them as soon as you want to use them as a reference. Give them plenty of time to complete your letter of recommendation. If it is getting close to deadline dates, politely remind your references to complete their portion. It is imperative that all the parts are completed on time! There is no excuse for late transcripts or letters of recommendation. You got this far, you can do it! Once you start receiving interview requests, you’ll have to schedule them around your rotations. You may be flying (if you decide to travel far) up to twice a week. You have to think about how you will balance rotation work, interview presentations, interview preparation, expenses, and traveling. Know your CV inside and out and have it memorized. You can never be too prepared!”
