What does it take to solve a problem in environmental science? This introductory course examines major environmental challenges through the lens of real-world solutions, including past successes in addressing ozonedepletion, toxic lead, smog, pesticides, and greenhouse gases. You will explore how principles of physics, chemistry, geology, and biology shape Earth's interconnected spheres, how human activities alter them, and how scientific evidence can help us understand and address those changes. Drawing on primary literature, media, in-class activities, and data analysis, you will develop the tools needed to evaluate environmental problems and identify potential solutions. Finally, you will explore how these tools might be applied to today's most urgent challenges--including climate change, forever chemicals, microplastics, and biodiversity loss--to assess potential pathways toward solutions.
