Transfer Credits and Permits In most cases, a maximum of 12 credits of graduate work completed in other institutions may be accepted as trans- fer credit, if approved by the appropri- ate department(s) and taken within the time limit specified for the degree or certificate program. Matriculated students seeking transfer credit for graduate work taken at another institution must submit the request for evaluation of such transfer credit no later than the end of their sec- ond semester in attendance. Only the following grades will be acceptable for transfer credit: A+, A, A-, B+, B, and B-. (In cases where a student obtained a P grade, and the P is equivalent to no lower than a B-, the grade may be transferred if approved by the appropriate department.) Trans- fer credit grades are not counted in the cumulative average, however. New graduate matriculants who wish to transfer credits must file a departmentally approved Advanced Standing Form in the Graduate Admis- sions Office, Powdermaker Hall, Room 100. There is no guarantee that courses taken at other institutions without prior approval will be accepted for credit. To be eligible for a permit to enroll outside Queens College in a course or courses that pertain to a graduate degree or certificate program as either prerequisite(s) for the program, or as transfer credit, the student must: 1. be matriculated in a graduate degree or certificate program; 2. have obtained the approval of the departmental Graduate Adviser for the permit; and 3. have registered for and completed with a passing grade at least one undergraduate prerequisite course or one graduate course as part of the grad- uate program at Queens College; except that, if the student is in the first semes ter of attendance, he or she must regis- ter in at least one graduate or undergraduate course at QC while simultaneously registering elsewhere for the permit course(s). Important Note: Grades for courses taken at other institutions and accept- ed as transfer or permit credit are not counted in the cumulative average com- puted for QC courses. No advanced standing or transfer credit may be post- ed to the QC record unless an official transcript certifying to the completion of the work has been submitted.

Courses taken at other colleges are not computed in the grade-point average. Transfer Credits Courses offered for transfer credit must be closely related to the goals of the library science program and to the individual’s career objectives. Determination of specific course eligi- bility for transfer credit rests with the Graduate Adviser in consultation with the appropriate specialization adviser(s). n Request for transfer of credit must be initiated by a student during the first semester’s course work in the library sci- ence program. Students are required to ES complete a Request for Transfer of Credit form, which may be obtained from the Graduate School of Library and Informa- tion Studies. n Courses to be considered for transfer of credit must be taken within the four-year time limit required for the completion of the degree. n Only courses with a grade of B (3.0) or better-may be transferred. n A maximum of 12 credits may be consid- ered for transfer credit for graduate work satisfactorily completed elsewhere.

Transfer of Credit Coursework completed at other institu- tions will be evaluated after the student is offered admission to Queens College. Transfer of credit will be considered for liberal arts courses completed at an ac- credited, degree-granting U. S. institu- tion with a minimum grade of C– (or any passing grade from a CUNY col- lege). Consequently, a maxi- mum of 75 transfer credits may be counted toward the 120 required for graduation. Transfer and reentry applicants who do not satisfy regular admissions criteria, who have been out of college for at least three years, and who demonstrate a high level of motiva- tion may be eligible for admission through Fresh Start.

A first-time freshman may, however, enter a CUNY college with 25% of the credits required for the degree, up to a maximum of 32 credits, earned at any time prior to admission through any of the following mechanisms individually or combined: 1) Successful scores achieved on such tests as the College Board’s Ad- vanced Placement (AP) program for high school students, the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), and the New York State College Proficiency Ex- aminations (CPE). All other students who have at- tended another college or accredited postsecondary institution, regardless of course grade or credit award, will be considered non-CUNY advanced stand- ing transfer students. 2) Students who are otherwise eligi- ble for the last semester free but leave a CUNY college and enroll in any number of credits elsewhere without having re- ceived specific approval from the home college will be considered as advanced standing (non-CUNY transfer) students upon their readmission to CUNY and will have forfeited their eligibility for the last semester free.
