Transfer Credits Credit hours accepted as transfer credit from a previous school, advanced placement credit, and CLEP credit will be used in the quantitative (Pace of Progress and Maximum Timeframe) measures as both attempted and completed hours. The Satisfactory Academic Progress evaluation looks at the student’s entire College academic record, including transfer credits, regardless if the student received federal financial aid for the previous terms of enrollment.

Credit for Prior Learningprior_learning
Credit for Prior Learning process. CPL is used to acknowledge college-level knowledge and skills that students acquire outside of formal higher education. Students may be able to fulfill some elective, major courses, and/or general education courses by going through the CPL process. Any active SUNY Oswego undergraduate student, enrolled in a degree program is eligible. SUNY Oswego will conduct an initial review of transcripts and discuss options for prior learning assessment as part of the Admissions or Transfer process. Accepted students are eligible to participate in assessment of prior learning activities. A minimum of 30 program hours of credit in residence at SUNY Oswego is required to obtain a baccalaureate degree and the credit earned through prior learning assessment does not count toward the 30 hours of residency credit. Prior learning must match existing courses using the course description and course learning outcomes. Students may incur fees with the assessment of prior learning. Course credit awarded via prior learning assessment will be added to the student’s transcript as transfer credit with the title “PLA” as appropriate with a grade of “T.” Attributes will be applied to each course as appropriate such as Liberal Arts, Upper Division, etc. Students must consult with their academic advisor or the Division of Extended Learning to determine which PLA option may help them attain their academic goals. Students are responsible for addressing potential acceptance of Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) credits in the event of transfer to another college.

Policy for Evaluation of Transfer Creditstransfer_credit
Policy for Evaluation of Transfer Credits For all transfer students, an initial degree audit will be completed after acceptance to SUNY Oswego. An unofficial degree audit can be requested prior to the application process. All credit is tentative until approval from the department following enrollment. All course work completed with a passing grade from regionally accredited institutions will transfer to Oswego, as described in the “Requirement Guidelines for Transfer Students” below. Courses completed at another institution transfer only as credits; grades do not transfer. Acceptance of transfer credits from non-accredited institutions is tentative until successful completion of one full-time semester at Oswego, after which equivalency credits will be determined by the Registrar upon consultation with the major department. Some training courses provided by the Armed Forces may be the equivalent of college courses and transfer credit may be obtained by presenting an official military transcript to evaluate the credits to the Office of Extended Learning. A guide provided by the American Council on Education is used to determine what credit might be granted. Blanket credit is not granted for military service. Credit will be granted for all courses sponsored by the United States Armed Forces Institute which are college-level and which are completed with a satisfactory end-of-course examination.

Transfer Credit: D Gradestransfer_credit
Transfer Credit: D Grades Credits from courses in which a grade of “D” was earned transfer directly to Oswego undergraduate programs. Students in some programs, however, must earn at least a C- in those courses transferred to meet a core, cognate or major elective requirement. Transfer students should review program requirements carefully to comply with departmental policies on D grades. Thus, if a D grade was previously earned, the course may have to be repeated to satisfy program requirements. At the graduate level only grades of A or B are transferable.
