Credit for Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Proficiency Examinationsprior_learning
Geneseo does not accept transfer credit for internal placement examinations given at other institutions. For further information see “ Placement in Foreign Languages Study ” or consult the Department of Global Languages and Cultures ). Credit for Prior Learning Geneseo accepts credit for prior learning as a part of our commitment to student success. Credit for prior learning is only available to matriculated students. The following categories of prior learning have articulations that may be referenced by incoming students: Academic credit earned at other higher education institutions (See transfer credit policy on this page) Non-credit courses taken at SUNY institutions, if articulated in Geneseo’s database, ACE, or other available guides Standardized published exams , such as Advanced Placement (AP), CLEP, and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs In-service military training, if articulated in Geneseo’s database or the ACE military guide Previously articulated courses and learning experiences will be available for current students to view in DegreeWorks. For learning experiences with no specific articulation in our databases, students will be provided general transfer credit and will be guided in how to seek more specific articulations. Any matriculated student, advisor, or admissions counselor may use this articulation form to apply for credit for learning experiences not already articulated at Geneseo, or to request a more precise articulation rather than general transfer credit. Examples of the kinds of experiences for which an articulation may be requested include, but are not limited to: Courses from higher education institutions or military training not previously articulated Challenge exams or portfolio review for potential credit from non-accredited institutions for specific Geneseo courses or pre-requisites Selected industry certifications, apprenticeships (including in partnership with labor unions), and related employer-recognized credentials Study abroad or courses taken at international institutions. Challenge Exams and Portfolio Reviews For unarticulated prior learning, not earned at an accredited institution of higher education or covered in any ACE guides, students may engage in a portfolio review or challenge exam to demonstrate knowledge of the content of a specific Geneseo course or degree requirement. Faculty role in determining credit for prior learning Faculty are involved in evaluating prior student learning by regularly reviewing articulations of AP, IB, CLEP, and other standardized examinations, reviewing course descriptions and syllabi from courses at other institutions, administering placement exams, evaluating challenge exams or portfolio reviews, and/or reviewing requests for new or revised course articulations. Application of prior learning credits Academic credits awarded by evaluation may fulfill various requirements, including major and minor courses; Integrative Curricular Microcredentials; SUNY General Education; and requirements of A Geneseo Education for a Connected World, including Integrative and Applied Learning. Credit is only granted for prior learning that is demonstrated to be equivalent to that in the institution’s registered curricula and component courses.

Credit for Prior Learningprior_learning
Credit for Prior Learning earned outside accredited higher education institutions or in activity courses may result in up to 15 credits toward a 120 credit undergraduate degree, or up to 12 toward a 30 (or more) credit master’s degree. Students should discuss prior learning credits in their initial advising appointment, as certain kinds of activity credits (experiential, internship, etc.) are limited in the number of credits that may be applied to a degree, and because prior learning credits may affect financial aid. See limits on kinds of undergraduate credits on this page under: Transfer Credit Credit Toward a Degree Timeline for application of prior learning credits Students’ prior learning credits will be applied in DegreeWorks as transcripts are received. Experiences in our articulation database will be applied as specific Geneseo courses where applicable. Unarticulated courses will be given general transfer credit, and students will be prompted to provide more information on their prior learning through the articulation form if they want an experience articulated for any specific college requirement. The college will make every effort to enter prior learning credit, submitted in a timely fashion with supporting documentation, before the student registers for courses in their first semester. Advising regarding the impact of prior learning credits Students are encouraged to meet with an academic and financial aid advisor to determine which credits to apply toward their Geneseo degree. Appeals process Students may use the articulation form to request a reevaluation of an articulated course. To appeal the outcome of an articulation request for a major course, students should meet with their dean. To appeal the outcome of a general education articulation, students should contact the School of Arts and Sciences dean. Further information supporting the appeal must be provided. Questions may be directed to the Office of the Registrar ( transferarticulation@geneseo.edu ). Communication of this PLA policy to students Admissions counselors and advisors shall discuss credit for prior learning with all incoming students, point them to this policy, and assist students in understanding the process for articulation of prior learning. When prior learning credits are applied, students will see the application in Degreeworks. Where credits come in as unarticulated transfer credits, students will be informed of the college’s articulation form and appeals process. Review and Revision to PLA Guidelines The Prior Learning Committee, appointed by the Provost, is responsible for monitoring the effectiveness of these PLA guidelines and recommending revision to the UPC committee of the College Senate when needed. The Committee is also responsible for how PLA is reported to SUNY and other internal and external stakeholders. The Committee meets at least once per semester.

Transfer Credittransfer_credit
Transfer Credit Transfer candidates are encouraged to meet with an admissions advisor to discuss the applicability of their transfer credits to the specific degree programs in which they plan to enroll. An unofficial transfer evaluation, including a list of equivalent courses at Geneseo for which credit has been granted, is provided upon request. Course credits transfer to Geneseo, although grades and quality points earned elsewhere do not transfer, and a Geneseo grade will not be excluded from the GPA solely on the basis of the student having earned a higher grade at another institution. If extenuating circumstances exist that prevent the student from retaking the course at Geneseo, the chair or dean may appeal to the registrar’s office. To receive appropriate credit, an applicant must ensure that official transcripts from all previous institutions are on file in the Admissions Office. Final authority on transfer credit acceptance lies with the Office of Advising. Courses completed at regionally accredited institutions of higher education which align significantly in substance and level with the courses that comprise the formal curriculum at Geneseo, and which are recorded on official transcripts are awarded credit under the following conditions: Students may transfer a maximum of 45 credits completed while concurrently enrolled in high school. Of these, a maximum of 30 credits may be AP, IB, and CLEP credits. Credit will not be awarded for courses that overlap with AP, IB and CLEP credits (see “ Credit for Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Proficiency Examinations ”). Students may transfer a maximum of 64 credits from a two-year, degree-granting institution (including pre-college credits, with no more than a total of 30 credits from AP, IB, and CLEP). Students may transfer up to an additional 15 credits (beyond 64) for courses that meet upper-level (300-level or above) major requirements. Students may transfer a maximum of 90 credits from a four-year, degree-granting institution (including no more than a total of 30 AP, IB, and CLEP credits and no more than 64 credits from two-year institutions). Students may not repeat courses that they have successfully completed at another degree-granting institution. Graduates of community colleges who earn A.A. or A.S. degrees in the liberal arts may expect full credit, up to a maximum of 64 credits, upon enrolling at Geneseo. Coursework from proprietary institutions will be reviewed on a course-by-course basis. A grade of C- or above must have been earned for each course accepted for transfer credit. Geneseo will not accept transfer credit for courses graded on a Pass/Fail or Satisfactory/ Unsatisfactory basis. For information on transferring credit for single courses taken during summer or intersession see “ Studying at Other Colleges .” For students transferring credits from another SUNY campus: Local general education requirements beyond the SUNY-GER shall not require a transfer student to exceed the number of credits to graduation required of native students in the same program. A passing grade counts as successful completion for the SUNY-GER area at any campus. A SUNY-GER course completed at another SUNY campus with a D-, D, or D+ grade will be indicated with a “TD” grade on the Geneseo transcript; while the student will not receive credits for the course, it will be used toward fulfillment of the general education category Students who qualify for seamless transfer of SUNY General Education will not need to complete additional general education credits, even if they transfer in D-, D, or D+ grades. Students who do not qualify for seamless transfer of SUNY General Education before matriculating at Geneseo must earn at least thirty credit hours in general education courses.9. Students may earn a maximum of 15 credits towards an undergraduate degree from Credit for Prior Learning (in addition to the credits earned for tests or taken at an accredited higher education institution above), which will count toward the 90 transfer credit hours a student may apply to a degree. 9.
