Applied Mathematics Minor

SUNY College at Potsdam · Potsdam, NY

A checklist is the list of requirements to complete this program and receive the award, as the college publishes it in its catalog. It is the same for everyone. It does not say what you have completed; that comes from applying your own record.

Description
The Minor in Applied Mathematics is comparable to the mathematics minor, with a focus on applied, rather than pure, mathematical learning. One cognate requirement takes students outside the mathematics department to learn mathematical practice put to use in other disciplines. The minor is designed to introduce students to mathematical tools for scientific analysis, such as Calculus, Statistics, Probability, and Linear Algebra.

      1. The minor in applied mathematics is not available to mathematics minors. The minor in applied mathematics is available to mathematics majors, but only two courses may be counted toward both programs. A mathematics major may satisfy the requirements for the applied mathematics minor by taking three further applied mathematics courses and one cognate course.
        Not resolved to a course
      2. Math majors may substitute, with prior approval of the chair, an additional cognate course for one elective course.
        Not resolved to a course
      3. Students graduating with an Mathematics minor must complete the minor requirements with at least a 2.0/S grade in each course.
        Not resolved to a course
      4. 17 hours of required courses for the Mathematics minor must be completed with a numerical minimum grade of 2.0. The remaining 3 hours may be completed with a minimum grade of 2.0/S.
        Not resolved to a course
      5. A minimum of three courses above must be taken in residence (not transfer credits).
        Not resolved to a course
      6. MATH 340
is a prerequisite for many of the elective courses above. Students may satisfy the requirements of the minor without MATH 340 , if they choose electives that do not require MATH 340 as a prerequisite.
