MATH 126Calculus IIA: Integration Theory0.5

In this course, we expand and build upon basic knowledge of differential and integral calculus. Various techniques and applications of integration are studied. The calculus of transcendental functions—such as the exponential, logarithmic, and inverse trigonometric functions—are also developed. A main theme in this course are the many ways functions can be defined, and arise naturally in problems in the mathematical sciences. The Department. Intended for students who do not plan on going on to MATH 127 . Students should enroll in MATH 125 instead of enrolling in MATH 126/ 127 . Not open to students who have received credit for MATH 125 . MATH 127Calculus IIB: Sequences and Series0.5

Real numbers may be represented as infinite decimals. In this course we generalize this representation by studying the convergence of sequences and of series of real numbers. These notions further generalize to the convergence of sequences and series of functions. We study these ideas and their relation to the Calculus. The Department.

MATH 340Discrete Optimization1

(Same as CMPU 340 ) This course gives a theoretical treatment of fundamental problems in algorithmic graph theory and discrete / combinatorial optimization that lie at the interface of computer science, discrete mathematics, and operations research. We begin with sophisticated and efficient exact algorithms for flow, matching, and cut problems. Next, we tackle NP-hard problems arising in scheduling, clustering, and network design, and explore effective solution approaches through the study of approximation algorithms. Finally, we introduce modern approaches and models, such as decision-making under uncertainty (online algorithms), parameterized analysis, randomized algorithms, and the exploding area of beyond-worst-case analysis. Throughout, we emphasize the power of techniques from continuous optimization, mainly linear programs (LPs), in solving discrete problems, e.g., by introducing frameworks such as LP rounding and the primal-dual method.
