DFF 001H - Introduction to Carpentry

In this course, students will learn about the typical workplace environment that carpenters encounter. Subjects such as the necessary training, types of jobs available to trained individuals, the soft skills needed to succeed in carpentry, and the economic outlook for the industry will be covered. This course will introduce students to all the opportunities their training will afford them, including promotions to management positions and entrepreneurship.

DFF 002H - Tools and Safety

Students will learn about the different types of tools used in construction (hand and power) and the protocols in place that ensure their workplaces are as safe as possible. In this course, students will be about to identify common hand and power tools, and how to select the appropriate items for each type of job. Tool maintenance and storage, proper housekeeping measures, and OSHA’s purpose and regulations will also be discussed. Students will become familiar with personal protective equipment (PPE) used in the industry, safely handling electrical power, and how to use ladders and scaffolding. This course will provide students with the information necessary for performing their job in construction safely and efficiently.

DFF 003H - Materials and Preparations

This course will help students understand the basics of construction math, material handling, and construction drawings. Successful completion of this course will allow students to be able to work with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; convert different forms of measurement, including weight, length, and volume; correctly use rulers and measuring tape; and be proficient in basic geometry. Additionally, students will learn about the format of specifications and explain how specifications are written and the essentials of motorized and non-motorized material handling equipment and describe their uses. Information on the purpose of a civil drawing, describing the use of architectural drawings and schedules and describing the use of structural drawings will be presented. Page 64 of 84

DFF 004H - Foundations and Framing

This course will teach students all about building foundations and how to frame the various parts of a building. Students will learn about defining building outlines, the necessity of footings and reinforcement, the three basic types of framing used in residential construction, how joists are integral to floor framing, basic wall and ceiling framing, the geometry of roof framing, the ways in which steel is used in framing. The information provided will give students the ability to engage in the early process of construction, including laying a stable foundation and framing the exterior and interior walls using lumber, steel and concrete.

DFF 005H - Roofing and Enveloping

This course dives further into roof completion and the different methods used for protecting structures from the elements. Students learn about roofing procedures using asphalt and wood shingles, gutter positioning, and barriers needed based on climate and safety concerns specific to roofing. In addition, this course will cover information on control layers and how they work together in building construction, the science behind control layers, and the necessity for high standards when working with control layers.

DFF 006H - Windows, Doors and Walls

In this course, students will obtain knowledge on doors and windows, their components, their composition, and the procedures for installation. Students will learn about the various openings for doors and windows, and the associated hardware necessary for each type of situation. This course will allow students to properly and effectively install doors and windows and their components. Students will become familiar with flashing and installation, types of cornices, various methods for installing wood, metal, and vinyl siding. In addition, students will gain knowledge on interior finishing, including drywall application, paneling, and ceiling finishes.

DFF 007H - Finishing

Students in this course will learn about putting the final touches on a construction project. Insulation, flooring, cabinetry, painting, and decorating are some of the topics covered. This course covers the principles of conduction, convection, and radiation, the thermal properties of construction materials, identifying types of stairs, understanding the fundamentals and standards in cabinetry, and preparing interior and exterior surfaces for painting. Students will gain knowledge on countertops, hanging wallpaper, different types of cabinet doors, and safety protocols needed when painting and finishing. This material, combined with previous courses, will enable a student to complete a construction project from start to finish.

DFF 008H - Intro to Special Construction

In this course, information on specialized construction areas, including chimneys, more sustainable construction, remodeling and repairing, and adding decks and porches to any structure. Topics such as basic masonry, constructing flues, advantages and disadvantages of post-and-beam framing, constructing manufactured structures, understanding wall bearings and the care needed when removing walls during renovations and repairs, supporting structures for decks and the differences between a deck and porch will be discussed. The fundamentals of electricity will be covered to help students with understanding other aspects of carpentry. Additionally, students will gain knowledge on how to construct more eco-friendly structures, including the programs in place that help facilitate green building, minimizing the impact on the environment, reducing energy consumption and improving interior air quality.
