| How Does Penn Evaluate Transfer Credit? | transfer_credit | How Does Penn Evaluate Transfer Credit? After you matriculate to Penn, the official approval of transfer credit is granted by the department from which you are seeking credit. For example, if you are seeking transfer credit for a course in Biology, Penn’s Biology Department would review the course details along with your transcript and ultimately decide if your credit is approved. This process will repeat for each course that you seek transfer credit for. Generally, in order for transfer credit to be awarded, the credits earned must meet the following criteria: be from academically- based courses taken at a regionally accredited institution bear a passing grade of a C or better be similar in content and credit hours to the courses on Penn’s campus. be taken for at least 40 contact hours each term At Penn, credit is awarded in course units and the normal course load results in eight to nine course units each year. Courses taken for fewer than 40 contact hours each term won’t transfer but, when appropriate, will be combined with other courses to give credit. If you want to determine whether your courses are likely to transfer before you apply, we encourage you to review course descriptions for your prospective department’s website and in the Course Register to see if classes you have already taken have equivalent courses available at Penn. Credits transferred from other institutions will become a part of your official record, but grades will not be placed on the transcript nor used in determining your cumulative grade point average. At least one full year of transferable academic course work (8 semester courses or equivalent from a non-semester system) should be completed by the spring term prior to your enrollment. Summer coursework taken immediately before you enroll will not typically count toward the 8 transferable courses. | 2026-2027 | admissions.upenn.edu |

Successful completion of the program allows foreign-trained dentists to take licensing exams in any state. PASS students are expected to successfully complete all competencies required in the 4-year program. | Transfer Credit to the Major | transfer_credit | Transfer Credit to the Major Only the department or program advisors determine which credits transferred from another institution can count toward the major. At least half the course units in the major must be taken at Penn. Some departments require more. Note: To request an institution be added for credit away or transfer credit requests, please work directly with your advisors and they will submit a ticket on your behalf. Students can check the status of their requests in XCAT at any time. Credit Away Approval must be obtained from the appropriate academic department at Penn before an external course can be completed for credit away. To seek approval, students log in to XCAT (External Credit Approval Tool) and submit a course syllabus and other supporting materials from the external institution. In many departments, a minimum grade of C is required for a course to be eligible for credit away. Some departments, however, require a minimum grade of B- for a course to be eligible for credit away. Chemistry is an example of such a department. A Penn department can act on an XCAT request for credit away in one of four ways: Departments may return the request in XCAT for more information. In that case, students should include the requested information and resubmit to the department. Departments can approve the request for a Penn equivalency. This approval applies to the student making the request only. Departments can approve the credit for the student requesting the course and set a precedent for students taking the course in the future. Departments may deny a request if there is no equivalency in the Penn department. | 2026-2027 | srfs.upenn.edu |

Through this system, students submit requests for Penn approval. Departments make determinations regarding approval and credit, and home school advisors and the Registrar's Office post credits to the Penn transcript. Questions about departmental approval should be directed to the appropriate department contact for credit evaluation . Note that receiving department approval in XCAT for an external course request is not sufficient for receiving credit at Penn for the course. Students must meet all of the requirements for receiving credit at Penn, which may vary by school. Students should contact their College Contact for any additional credit requirements beyond departmental approval. Access XCAT | 2026 | www.college.upenn.edu |
