Transfer of Credit from SLCC to Other Institutionstransfer_credit
Transfer of Credit from SLCC to Other Institutions Salt Lake Community College is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education. SLCC credit from college level courses (numbered 1000 or above) is accepted by most colleges and universities in the United States. Utah’s public colleges and universities have established transfer of credit policies that outline how credit will transfer within the state system. SLCC courses numbered 1000 or above are accepted as general elective, general education, or major credit by Utah’s public colleges and universities in the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE). Most private and out-of-state institutions also accept SLCC courses numbered 1000 and above; however, there may be exceptions. Students should check with the institution to which they plan to transfer to determine exactly how SLCC credit will be accepted and applied to degree programs. The Utah Transfer Guide ( https://utahtransferguide.org/ ) provides students an unofficial summary of how courses completed at SLCC will be accepted and applied to bachelor’s degree programs at Utah public colleges and universities. SLCC offers Associate of Science (AS) and Associate of Arts (AA) degrees designed to provide the first two years of most bachelor’s degree programs. Students who earn an SLCC AS or AA degree will satisfy all lower division general education requirements for a bachelor’s degree at Utah’s public colleges and universities. This policy does not apply to Associate of Applied Science (AAS), Associate of Pre-Engineering (APE), or Associate of Pre-Science (APS) degrees because these degrees do not contain all transfer general education requirements. SLCC offers an Academic Certificate in General Education that is awarded to students who complete all transfer general education requirements per USHE policy. This Certificate satisfies all lower division general education requirements for a bachelor’s degree by Utah’s public colleges and universities. Some bachelor’s degrees require specific courses in general education, students should check with the institutions to which they plan to transfer to identify these courses. Students can begin the first two years of lower division major requirements for most transfer bachelor’s degrees at SLCC. SLCC offers AS, AA, APE and APS degrees in more than 40 different majors. Many courses are “articulated” as equivalent to courses at the four-year institutions in Utah. Students should consult an academic advisor or the academic department to select appropriate courses that apply to the bachelor’s degree at the institution to which they plan to transfer. Completion of a transfer degree does not guarantee automatic acceptance into a specific major at other colleges and universities; some four-year major programs are restricted and require special application as well as a competitive GPA. Most private institutions in Utah, including BYU, Westminster University, and Western Governors University have similar policies regarding the transfer of SLCC credits. However, there are a few exceptions that should be reviewed with an advisor at the receiving institution before enrolling in courses.
