TAKING COURSES AT ANOTHER INSTITUTION Hampton University students may be permitted to earn credit for courses taken at another accredited institution of higher education. Approved transfer credit from another accredited institution of higher education affords the student with academic credit only. TRANSFER CREDIT A student may elect to take a course at any accredited institution of higher education. Transfer credit can only be posted to the student’s record if the student is currently registered when the transaction is received in the Registrar’s Office. No online courses from another institution will be accepted as transfer credit for students matriculating in the Undergraduate College. Transfer credit that is officiall accepted should be entered on the student’s official tran- script at the University no later than the end of the first year of enrollment as a regular degree-seeking student. Coursework successfully completed in an accredited graduate school may be transferred to Hampton Univer- sity toward the fulfillment of course requirements if the following conditions are met: • Credit has been earned within five (5) years of the time the student is admitted. • A grade of “B” or better has been earned in courses for which transfer of credit is being sought. Students planning to take a course outside the Grad- uate College should consult their advisors and file with the Graduate Office an Evaluation of Transfer Credit Form. Transfer credit is officially accepted and entered on the record when the student is admitted. Credit earned as part of a Hampton University 2024-2026 baccalaureate degree program upon which a student is admitted to the Graduate College will not be accepted as transfer credit for the graduate degree unless specifically noted in the student’s approved degree program. CREDIT BY EXAMINATION A maximum of eight (8) hours may be counted toward degree requirements. Courses previously taken within the time limits given above may not be repeated by Credit by Examination. Transfer Students The amount of time given a transfer student to complete his/her degree program is prorated based on the number of credit hours that are transferred to Hampton University. The total number of transfer credits plus your hours attempted and earned here at the University used measure academic progress. For federal aid eligibility, the student cannot attempt more than 180 credits, including transfer credits. Insofar as qualitative stan- dard applies, your transfer credits cumulative grade point average is not counted toward your Hampton University cumulative grade point average, only those credits earned here at Hampton Univer- sity are counted. For Masters: All work accepted at the time the student is admitted to candidacy must have been earned within a five-year period prior to admission to candidacy (at HU, and transfer credits).

Students who have been separated from the Undergraduate Col- lege for more than six years may transfer up to 60 credit hours to University College. Students choosing dual major options are required to main- tain at least a 2.5 GPA. In order to declare a dual major, students must be accepted as a major by both programs.

Credit-By-Examination by the University College A student may request credit by examination for the purpose of validating knowledge of the material presented in a course. Only under compelling circumstances may a student, with the approval of his/her advisor and Dean, be granted permission to obtain credit by examination. Prior to processing the request, the “Application for Credit by Examination” form must be approved by the advisor. Credit by examination shall not be attempted for a course previously taken or failed by the student. No fresh- man student will be allowed to earn credit by examination for 300 or 400 level courses. Letter grades will not be given for credit by examination. Hampton University 2018-2020 Credit for Life or Work Experience Students should recognize that while many prior learning expe- riences are meaningful they are often not equal to the quality of knowledge learned in the college classroom. Credit for prior learning experience is awarded only for comparable courses required of the student’s academic major. 2. Upon completion and approval of the application, students must obtain the Prior Learning Portfolio Student Information Guide. All students who are enrolled in degree programs with University College will be given a Writing Competency Examination when they have completed total of 30 credit hours (inclusive of transfer credit hours). Transfer Students The amount of time given a transfer student to complete his/her degree program is prorated based on the number of credit hours that are transferred to Hampton University. The total number of transfer credits plus your hours attempted and earned here at Hampton University is used to quantify academic progress. Transfer Credit Evaluations for Dual Enrollment, Early College and AP/IB Exams Students who have completed dual enrollment courses, college courses, or AP and IB exams may be eligible for transfer credit. Please submit your official college transcript via email to: applicationstatus@hamptonu.edu. The Office of Admission will complete an evaluation of credits and return the course review to your HU EMAIL address. The accepted transfer credits will be added to your official student record in the Office of the Registrar and become a part of your official transcript. Evaluations will be completed throughout the summer months and all transcripts received on or before June 30th will be reviewed by August 15th. Please note only courses from regionally accredited institutions with a grade of C- or higher and an equivalent HU course will be awarded credit. During the registration process, you may not wish to sign up for courses that you have already completed.
