| Credit by Examination | prior_learning | Credit by Examination College degrees represent growth and maturity in certain fundamental knowledge and skills rather than a mere accumulation of credit hours. In recognition of the fact that some persons may achieve academic competence through nontraditional means, such as private study, technical employment or prior instruction, JMU endorses the concept of credit by examination. By permitting a student to earn credit by academic unit examination for knowledge already gained, highly motivated or academically advanced persons are able to accelerate their program. It is the student's responsibility to ascertain what preparation and background are necessary for taking advantage of this means of acceleration, before attempting an examination. Any enrolled undergraduate student may apply to take an examination for credit in selected courses in the undergraduate curriculum. Permission to take an examination for credit must be obtained from the head of the academic unit in which credit is sought. A student will not be permitted to take the examination for credit for a course which satisfies any of the following: The student is presently enrolled in the course. The student has previously completed the course. The course is a prerequisite for a course in which the student is currently enrolled or has completed. The course is numbered at a lower level than other courses in which the student is currently enrolled or has previously completed, unless the express approval of the academic unit head is secured. The course appears previously on the student's record with a grade assigned due to a violation of the Honor System. Each academic unit will use its own discretion in developing the form of the examination and in determining the procedure to be followed. Students may earn as many as 30 credit hours through credit by academic unit examination, with no more than 12 credit hours in any one discipline. To receive credit, a student must make a grade of "C" or better on the examination. Each academic unit shall determine what constitutes a "C" for that academic unit. No academic unit shall require a grade higher than a "C" for passing the examination. The examination for a course can be taken only once in a given semester. A nonrefundable fee will be charged to the student's account. Each academic unit will determine its time schedule for giving examinations. | 2026-2027 | catalog.jmu.edu |
| Credit by Examination | prior_learning | Credit by Examination Credit by examination is available at the discretion of the graduate program. Graduate programs can award credit by examination. Programs offering credit by examination must include policies and procedures for this option in their formal policies document or student handbook. Each program can use its own discretion in developing the form of the examination and in determining the procedure to be followed. A maximum of nine credit hours can be earned through credit by examination, with no more than one third of the required credit hours for a program earned by a combination of exam or transfer. Permission to take an examination for credit must be obtained from the head of an academic unit in which credit is sought. The cost for the exam will be $50 per credit hour attempted. Successfully earning credit by examination will result in a grade of "CR," with credit given, on the transcript. Transfer Credit Students who wish to receive graduate credit for courses taken prior to entering a JMU graduate program must submit requests to their advisor during the first semester of enrollment. With the exception of some community college degrees in General Studies, JMU General Education requirements will be waived for those students who have completed either an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Arts and Sciences degree at a Virginia community college. For the complete listing of degrees associated with a Virginia Community College that waive all General Education requirements, go to Transfer Advising. Students who complete one of these associate degrees and are offered admission will receive junior-level status; however, due to varying major and degree requirements, junior-level status does not guarantee graduation in two years. The term portfolio is used to describe a collection of evidence to support the PLA process. Through the portfolio, a student makes a case by succinctly identifying, articulating and documenting mastery of college level learning or its equivalence. PLA is an option for a student who has gained significant learning through experiences including, but not limited to: workplace training, volunteer service, civic activities, conferences, workshops, vocational interests, travel and independent reading. Prior learning credit depends on each student’s individual experiences and may not be a viable option for every student. The process entails extensive preparation, excellent academic writing skills and the ability to meet deadlines. Before a portfolio is submitted for approval, students must complete IS 206 . There is no guarantee that a portfolio submitted for credit will be approved. | 2026-2027 | catalog.jmu.edu |

If the necessary information is not on the official transcript, it must be obtained in writing from the appropriate dean of the institution where the course work was earned. In all cases, courses considered for transfer of credit must be applicable to a comparable degree at JMU. Courses that are not intended by the institution offering them to be part of a degree program, such as extension and in-service courses, are not acceptable for transfer to JMU. | Transfer of Credit from Other Institutions | transfer_credit | Transfer of Credit from Other Institutions A student wishing to earn credits at another institution should declare their intent to do so by completing the process outlined on the Office of the Registrar's website. In certain circumstances, official prior approvals may be required via the transfer credit approval form. Transfer requests for courses not listed in the transfer equivalency guide should be accompanied by course descriptions and/or syllabi as part of the process. The General Education program allows students to transfer credit for a particular course based on a comparison of course objectives and content at JMU with those at the other institution. Once students have initially enrolled for classes at JMU they are expected to complete the General Education program through JMU enrollment. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by the Office of General Education. After students have enrolled for classes, they may use transfer courses to satisfy up to three General Education program requirements. Special exceptions to this policy will be reviewed on an individual basis. Such exceptions may include those students who have been discontinued from JMU, or those who wish to participate in study abroad programs or other special circumstances. The student is responsible for having an official transcript sent to the Office of the Registrar when the work has been completed and final grades have been posted. Credit hours will be awarded for approved courses carrying a grade of "C" or better (2.0 quality points).
