At NOVA there are four broad categories where students earn credit for prior learning. This is not offered at NOVA; however students who have taken credits from another school should refer to a different method for credit for prior learning. Experiential Learning to Academic Credit Portfolio Development (formerly known as PLACE) - the credit for prior learning portfolio method is dedicated to providing college credit to a student who has acquired significant knowledge outside of a traditional classroom setting. | 2026 | catalog.nvcc.edu |

| Credit for Prior Learning Committee | prior_learning | Credit for Prior Learning Committee Proposals Definition and Types of Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is the administrative awarding of academic credit for college-level learning experiences outside of NOVA. Students may be awarded Credit for Prior Learning for the following credentials and experiences: Prior college coursework Nationally standardized exams (AP, IB, CLEP, etc.) and challenge exams (ABLE) Industry certifications Military training Work/life experience Visit the designated pages of this manual to learn about the steps to obtain CPL, credit breakdowns, and other important information relevant to each type. Policies NOVA follows SACSCOC Accreditation Principles and complies with VCCS Academic Policies when evaluating and awarding Credit for Prior Learning. To be eligible for a Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) review, students must be admitted to NOVA, select an academic program, and enroll in at least one credit course. They must also submit official documents and appropriate request forms. NOVA does not award credit based on another institution’s evaluations; all sources of credit will be evaluated based on NOVA’s policies and guidelines. Credit for Prior Learning is applicable only to NOVA’s curricular requirements; it may not be accepted as transfer credit by other institutions. Students should consult with their intended transfer institution for its acceptance policy of CPL. Total credits possible through all forms of Credit for Prior Learning must not exceeded 75% of a particular curriculum. The remaining 25% is a residency requirement to be completed at NOVA. All accepted credits for prior learning will be acknowledged and recorded on the student’s NOVA permanent record with the transferring agency identified. No unsuccessfully attempted credit for prior learning applications or examinations results will be recorded on the student’s permanent record. No grades, scores or grade points from an external transcript will be recorded on the student’s NOVA record. The grade awarded for Credit for Prior Learning is "T" for college coursework, nationally standardized test scores, industry certifications, and military training. Students receive a grade of "P" for challenge exams (ABLE) and Credit for Work/Life Experience. Neither "T" nor "P" grade impacts a student's earned grade or GPA at NOVA because it has no quality points. No Credit for Prior Learning will be awarded if it duplicates course credit earned at NOVA with a passing grade (“A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” “P,” and “S”) or a grade of "X" (Audit). Students who, after receiving an F, U, or W grade in a course at NOVA, successfully demonstrate knowledge aligned to that course’s learning objectives through a credit for prior learning method approved by NOVA’s faculty may use the credit awarded for that course as a repeat of the course taken at NOVA. Prior grades with quality points will continue to be factored into the student’s cumulative GPA and the student will be ineligible to re-enroll into that course at NOVA for a grade improvement once the CPL has been officially recorded on their academic record. Evaluation Staff Faculty who are subject matter experts determine all course equivalencies that are published in this manual and the Transfer Evaluation System (TES) . The Credit for Prior Learning Committee makes recommendations to the Curriculum Committee and the Admin Council for acceptance of non-traditional learning experiences for credit. The Office of Academic Affairs provides oversight of the overall evaluation process to ensure academic integrity of CPL. The College Records Office (CRO), responsible for reviews of college transcripts, test scores, and industry certifications, and the Office of Military and Veteran Benefits, in charge of military transcript reviews, verify documents and forms they receive and award credits based on faculty's evaluations. The Office of Academic Affairs assists students seeking Credit for Work/Life Experience through portfolio development. Appeals Students who wish to request reconsideration of Credit for Prior Learning awarded to their record should review their transfer credit report with an academic advisor who will then contact the appropriate office for assistance. Credit for Prior Learning Committee The Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) Committee, a subcommittee of the Curriculum Committee, reviews and recommends CPL proposals to the Curriculum Committee and the Admin Council for approval. It also hears requests for new or revised policies and procedures for Credit for Prior Learning and monitors the implementation of the policies and procedures to assure consistent application throughout the college. The CPL Committee consists of 15 members: Credit for Prior Learning Coordinator (Chair) Associate Director of Curriculum and Innovative Education Director of Military Outreach and Veteran Support Services College Registrar Chair of Registrars' Working Group (term-based) 1 Academic Dean (term-based) 1 Dean of Student Success (term-based) 1 Counselor (term-based) 1 Academic Advisor (term-based) 5 Instructional Faculty (1 IET, 1 Health Sciences, 1 Skilled Trades, 2 General Education Disciplines) (term-based) 1 Workforce Development Representative The Chief Academic Officer appoints the term-based committee members, and the appointments are for two-year terms. Term-based members may renew their membership for unlimited times. Proposals Faculty, staff, and students can submit CPL proposals for the followings reasons: New CPL opportunity Update to a previously approved CPL proposal Change to a CPL procedure These proposals should be submitted to the CPL Coordinator at CPL@nvcc.edu . The CPL Coordinator forwards proposals to the CPL Committee. | 2026 | catalog.nvcc.edu |
| Credit from Other Colleges and Universities | transfer_credit | NOVA accepts transfer credit for college-level courses completed at an accredited college with a grade of “C” or higher (a C- is considered below a C and it is not accepted for transfer), provided the courses are consistent with the course requirements of the curriculum in which the student enrolls at NOVA. Credit for Prior Learning NOVA recognizes prior college-level learning from nontraditional sources. Students may request an evaluation of professional trainings, certifications, or college-level coursework by submitting the appropriate documentation specified in the Credit for Prior Learning Manual and filling out the Transfer Credit Evaluation Request Form 125-049E for all prior learning except Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and CLEP exam scores. The Credit for Prior Learning Manual is updated annually and has an effective implementation date of the first day of the Fall semester of each academic year. | 2026 | catalog.nvcc.edu |
| Frequently Asked Questions | prior_learning | No. Whether your portfolio is accepted for credit depends on the alignment of your work/life experience with NOVA courses and your ability to articulate that alignment and present supporting documentation in your portfolio. Faculty evaluators compare your prior learning with the learning outcomes outlined in your chosen course content summary to find the alignment of competency and knowledge in both sources. | 2026 | catalog.nvcc.edu |
| General Elective Credit | transfer_credit | SDV Transfer Credit for Students with Previous Degrees Steps to Request an Evaluation of Transfer Credit Apply for admission and select a program of study (declare a major). Updates will be sent to your NOVA student email . Transfer Credits from Accredited Colleges or Universities NOVA accepts transfer credit for college-level courses completed at an accredited college or university with a grade of “C” or higher, provided the courses are consistent with the course requirements of the curriculum in which the student enrolls at NOVA. Credit also may be transferred from institutions if the Transfer of Credit Practices of Designated Educational Institutions, published by American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, states that credit from the institution “is generally accepted for courses that are appropriate to the reporting institution’s baccalaureate programs.” Post-secondary Credits from Non-Accredited Colleges or Universities Credits earned at post-secondary institutions without accreditation recognized by the U.S. However, in some cases where a post-secondary institution offers specialized educational opportunities (culinary institutes, etc.) and the institution is empowered by a state to award associate degrees or above, NOVA faculty may pre-approve the recommendation to award equivalent transfer credit for courses within a specific discipline. Courses, which have been specifically evaluated and will be accepted for transfer, are listed in this manual; only credit earned after the date specified in the review will be accepted. Transfer Equivalency Statement Courses will be transferred at full credit value. It is not intended as a means for credentialing students or providing documentation for job promotions, etc. Students are required to submit a Transfer Credit Evaluation Request form #125-049E and send official documents to AsktheCRO@nvcc.edu to initiate the evaluation process. VCCS students will need to submit this form in order to be identified by the College Records Office for transfer credit evaluation. Prior to submitting the transfer credit evaluation form #125-049E, the student must ensure they are placed in the degree plan of their choice. Upon submission of the transfer credit evaluation request form #125-049E from a student, a maximum of 45 credits will be transferred in as applicable to the student’s degree plan on record in the Student Information System (SIS) at the time of the request. Applicable credits will be transferred in with consideration given to elective courses that require a faculty review in order to be substituted for a direct course equivalency. Throughout this process, the CRO will scan the requestor’s academic record and all Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) documents submitted for duplicate credit awards. Visit the following web page for more information about transcript evaluation, https://www.nvcc.edu/about/offices/college-records-office/index.html . Elective (EEE) Credit All acceptable courses will be transferred as closely as possible to their NOVA course equivalents. Direct course credit cannot be given for courses that have no equivalence or are not offered at NOVA; in such cases, only elective credit may be granted. Once the review is complete, students can view the equivalency in the Transfer Credit Evaluation System (TES) database . Students may submit a course syllabus via email to cpl@nvcc.edu to assist with course reviews or request a re-evaluation of elective courses for specific credit. This decision is made by the academic dean and the pathway council responsible for the chosen curriculum through course substitution . Required Grades Generally, only courses earning a grade of “C” (not “C-“) or better will be accepted for transfer credit. Courses earning a grade of “P” (for a Pass/Fail course) and, with the designation “CR” (for credit), may be accepted for transfer if the transcript indicates that credit hours have been awarded and if the transcript states that the P grade is the equivalent of an A-C (not D) grade. Credit for Prior Learning Awards on Transcripts NOVA will recognize and award transfer credit for credit awarded through institutionally administered exams, portfolios, etc. and posted as course equivalent credit on official transcripts from colleges and universities that are accredited in the U.S. Once the College receives a copy of the evaluation, appropriate transfer credit will be awarded and posted to the student’s record unless NOVA needs additional information. Note: Credit for ENG 111 College Composition I or higher English credit will be awarded only if the student has taken NOVA’s English Placement Test and qualified for ENG 111 College Composition I . Ten Year Limit Transfer credit for Information Technology, Computer Science, Nursing, or Health Sciences courses more than ten years old are not routinely accepted; the Pathway Dean must approve exceptions. General Elective Credit Transfer credit may be allowed for certain courses which do not correspond directly to NOVA courses but are in disciplines NOVA offers. | 2026 | catalog.nvcc.edu |
