WMR 240Introduction to Search and Rescue3

WMR 303: Wilderness First Aid (1) The Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course will help students prepare for the unexpected. This fast paced, hands-on training is designed to meet the needs of trip leaders, camp staff, outdoor enthusiasts and individuals working in remote locations. It will introduce students to caring for people who become ill or injured far from definitive medical care. Classroom lectures and demonstrations are combined with realistic scenarios where mock patients will challenge you to integrate your learning. Taught by NOLS Wilderness Medicine Instructors in a two-day format, held on a weekend in April. WMR 304: High-Angle Rock Rescue (2) The High-Angle Rock Rescue course addresses the needs of first responders in low-angle and high-angle terrain while also providing the baseline skills required to assist in technical descents, lowers and raises systems. The course will cover: Site Control (preventing anyone else from becoming a victim through scene management), Incident Identification (able to identify whether an accident site will require an operations level or a technician level response), Basic Patient Rescue (on low and high-angle terrain), and Litter Operation (able to perform operations that require the lowering and raising of a litter and/or a litter attendant). Prerequisite ORM 231 Rock Climbing and ORM 241 Advanced Rock Climbing, or instructor permission. An additional fee is required. Field trips required. (S) WMR 305: Wilderness First Responder (3) This is a nationally recognized program that trains participants to respond to emergencies in remote settings. The 80-hour curriculum, taught in a 9-day format, includes standards for urban and extended care situations. Special topics include but are not limited to: wound management and infection, realigning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, patient monitoring and long term management problems, up-to-date information on all environmental emergencies, plus advice on drug therapies. Emphasis is placed on prevention and decision-making, not the memorization of lists. This course is designed specifically to provide you with the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations. Half of your time will be spent completing practical skills, case studies and scenarios designed to challenge your decision making abilities. Adult CPR is included in this course. (F) WMR 307: Wildland Firefighting Certifications (3) This is the first and foundational wildland fire behavior course with the National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) curriculum and includes:  130 Firefighter Training, S-190 Wildland Fire Behavior, L-180 Human Factors on the Fireline, & ICS-100 Introduction to the Incident Command System.  It introduces students to the basic concepts of wildland fire behavior, including: wildland fire environment components, characteristics and interactions of fuels, weather, and topography affect fire behavior; and fire behavior affects risk to firefighters. The Incident Qualifications Card (Red Card) certification is necessary to become qualified for wildland fire operations. Obtaining a Red Card involves a combination of classroom training, a field exercise, and in some cases, physical fitness testing. Wildland fire operations offer a variety of positions and necessitate a diverse skill set. Once complete, the Red Card certification must be renewed every year by taking the Annual Fireline Safety Refresher course (RT-130). An additional fee is required. Field trips required. (F) WMR 339: Outdoor Emergency Care for Ski/Bike Patrol Challenge (1) The Outdoor Emergency Care for Bike/Ski Patrol Challenge Course is part of the National Ski Patrol. The course allows students that have successfully completed their EMT (State and/or National Registry) to bridge their emergency medicine skills with the specific needs of the year-round resort including: area operations and risk management; emergency care; lift evacuation and rope knowledge; skiiing/snowboarding; and toboggan handling. Utilizing strong ski and/or snowboarding skills to gain and assist in gaining employment opportunities at commercial resorts. Prerequisit: WMR 200 Emergency Medical Technician and successful EMT certification. Additional fees are required. (S) 259
