The course provides a foundational introduction to theories, methodologies, questions, and themes in contemporary dance research and fosters the capacity for students to develop a critical and analytical voice, as well as independent research skills. Students will immerse themselves in key texts (verbal, audio-visual, and kinesthetic) that illuminate epistemological foundations, historical trends, current practice, and future directions of dance as a mode of human inquiry. Research Methods in Dance affords all students the opportunity to determine a topic/subject for research and move through an essential research process, culminating in the writing of a research paper.
This course continues to explore and expand upon research methods as mapped in DANC 565: Research Methods in Dance I. The course provides a continued foundation to theories, methodologies, questions, and themes in contemporary dance research and fosters the capacity for students to develop a critical and analytical voice, as well as independent research skills. Research Methods in Dance II research frameworks will center on the major requirement and components of the capstone MFA Dance thesis project: written document & creative manifestation. 81
Digital Media Tutorials will provide an overview and basic understanding of all areas and phases of digital media production (photography, sound, light, and video) and an overview and hands-on experience in using digital tools to create content that supports the creative work and its presentation. This course focuses on the basic use of a range of equipment and software in the production and post-production of audio-visual content. You will learn how to choose the media format that informs and suits your new dance/performance work adequately.
