Provides a comprehensive and conceptual examination of fundamental mathematical concepts covered in VDOE K-8 Standards of Learning (SOLs). Designed for future K-8 mathematics educators. Emphasizes problem-solving, logical reasoning, the establishment of connections between mathematical concepts, effective communication of mathematical ideas, and the utilization of multiple representations.
MTH 130Fundamentals of Reasoning (Fall Spring Summer)3
Presents elementary concepts of algebra, linear graphing, financial literacy, descriptive statistics, measurement and geometry. Based on college programs being supported by this course, colleges may opt to add additional topics such as logic or trigonometry.
MDE 10 or direct placement. This course is intended for CTE programs.
MTH 154Quantitative Reasoning (Fall Spring Summer)3
Presents topics in proportional reasoning, modeling, financial literacy and validity studies (logic and set theory). Focuses on the process of taking a real-world situation, identifying the mathematical foundation needed to address the problem, solving the problem and applying what is learned to the original situation.
Completion of MDE 10 followed by co-enrollment in MDE 54 with MTH 154 or direct placement. This is a Passport and UCGS Transfer Course.
MTH 155Statistical Reasoning (Fall Spring Summer)3
Presents elementary statistical methods and concepts including visual data presentation, descriptive statistics, probability, estimation, hypothesis testing, correlation and linear regression. Emphasis is placed on the development of statistical thinking, simulation, and the use of statistical software.
Completion of MDE 10 or direct placement. Credit will not be awarded for both MTH 155: Statistical Reasoning and MTH 245: Statistics I or equivalent. This is a Passport and UCGS Transfer Course.
MTH 161Precalculus I (Fall Spring Summer)3
Presents topics in power, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions, and systems of equations and inequalities.

MTH 195Topics in Math: Foundations of Data Science (Fall Only)3
This course introduces students to the basic skills needed to work with data. Students learn how to understand different types of data, organize and clean datasets, and identify unusual or missing information. They will practice analyzing data by calculating summary statistics, examining patterns, and exploring relationships between variables. The course also emphasizes communicating results clearly through charts, graphs, and other visual tools. In addition, students are introduced to basic ideas behind machine learning and artificial intelligence, including when different methods are used and how results are evaluated. Overall, the course focuses on preparing data, analyzing it, and communicating the findings in a clear and meaningful way.
Presents an overview of statistics, including descriptive statistics, elementary probability, probability distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, correlation, and linear regression. Credit will not be awarded for both MTH 155 and MTH 245 or equivalent in the same academic plan.

MTH 298Seminar and Project (Spring Only)3
Data Visualization and Storytelling with Tableau Presents visualization techniques and data summarization skills using Tableau to prepare students to communicate the implications of data analysis. Introduces techniques of data cleaning and organization using Tableau. Examines the difference between well-structured and poorly formatted data. Explores the creation of common visualizations best suited for answering questions from a student’s occupational objectives. Prepares students to be successful on the Tableau Desktop Specialist exam.
Completion of MTH 245 with a grade of C or better OR equivalent OR program lead approval. Designed as a math elective course for data science programs.
