ADS 101Social Impact of Global Built Environments3
Credits: (3) This course is an exploration of global built environments with a focus on explaining significant architecture design styles, movements, and trends within the context of social justice. Students will learn how built environments perpetuate power dynamics, privilege, oppression, and opportunity between groups based on race, gender, and class. Learn how architecture and planning contributes to a sustainable and socially just future.
Credits: (4) This course is an introduction to design principles and drawing techniques used to develop and communicate architectural ideas. Topics include ordering systems, spatial relationships, the design process, and architectural theory. Students explore and practice observational sketching, texture and depth, analytical drawing, and orthographic drawing. Professional standards for layout, drawing organization, use of line weights, scaling, and dimensioning of architectural drawings will be introduced. 3 lecture hours and 3 lab hours per week are required for this course. Learning Outcomes Demonstrate the ability to depict architectural forms, materials, and entourage by hand and with the use of graphic software. Understand the vocabulary of design terms related to architectural theory. Apply design principles in solving abstract two- and three-dimensional design problems. Understand the purpose of the layout, scale, and view selection for architectural drawings.

ADS 112 . Learning Outcomes Execute basic drawing, editing, and plotting using AutoCad software. Execute basic modeling and editing using SketchUp software. Execute architectural renderings using the latest rendering software. Communicate and present design data using appropriate professional software and solutions. Utilize computer graphics software to collaborate and share design concepts for presentations.
ADS 112 and ADS 172 . Learning Outcomes Analyze and solve design problems by applying current architectural and interior design principles. Learn to research and critically think to generate an individually conceptualized design response to a design problem. Examine sustainable design solutions based on programming and site context. Evaluate design elements incorporated into design decisions including form, space, structure, fenestration, lighting, furnishings, and finishes. Create well-crafted presentation materials using 2D and 3D presentation techniques.
ADS 211 . Learning Outcomes Analyze and solve complex design problems by applying current architectural and interior design principles. Examine sustainable design solutions based on programming and site context, and how sustainability can create healthy environments for contractors and building occupants. Examine and engage the role of architecture and its ability to create equitable communities. Evaluate design elements incorporated into design decisions affecting indoor air quality, acoustics, and lighting. Create well-crafted presentation materials using 2D and 3D presentation techniques.
ADS 289Cooperative Education4
Credits: (4) Topics are selected to respond to the particular needs of students and the special preparation needed for career opportunities as they exist at the time of the course offering. A learning contract containing specific educational objectives related to work experience and the student’s field of study is developed by the student, the faculty, and (when possible) the supervisor that the cooperative education student will report to. Course requirements include a minimum of 140 hours of work in the student’s field of study, maintenance of a log (usually daily) of hours worked and duties performed, and a work-related final project.
Combined approval by the course instructor (or Department Chair) and Career and Transfer Services. Learning Outcomes Demonstrate an ability to work responsibly and cooperatively in an architecture related work environment. Evaluate the work experience and compare it to the student’s own career goals and academic coursework taken. Demonstrate on-the-job skills involving time management, personal job responsibilities, and employee, peer, superior, and subordinate personal relationships. Apply architectural design skills concepts to on-the-job problems.
