Second Semester (15 Credits)
This general information course addresses topics which affect safe working environments as well as ecological concerns for future technicians. Students are taught hangar safety, starting of aircraft, directing aircraft for taxi, tying down of aircraft, and jacking an aircraft. The student will gain an understanding and awareness of human factors unique to aviation. Students will receive instruction in the criteria for selecting the proper tool for a job and then learn how to properly and safely use the tools that are essential to the aviation technician.
This course provides a foundational understanding of FAA-approved publications, including FARs, maintenance manuals, and A&P mechanic privileges and limitations. Students learn to read, interpret, and apply FAA and manufacturer maintenance data, regulations, airworthiness directives, and advisory materials, and to accurately complete aircraft maintenance forms and records.
This course introduces essential aviation measurement and inspection techniques, including the proper use and calibration of precision tools and nondestructive testing methods. Students learn FAA-approved inspection programs, appropriate inspection techniques, and procedures to ensure aircraft integrity while preventing damage to components and test equipment.
This course is an introduction to the materials and processes used in the construction of aircraft. The student will learn to identify, properly select, and use a variety of aircraft hardware and materials used for aircraft repair and maintenance. Students will learn how to inspect and check welds and to perform precision measurements. Students will learn about the practices and processes used for cleaning aircraft parts and structures, and the methods used to protect and treat them from corrosion.
