DNA 100Dentistry as a Profession2

This course is designed to give students important knowledge of the historical challenges that took place and contributions that were made to advance the dentistry profession into what it is today. Students will learn how to provide excellent and professional dentistry by learning the contributing roles of dental assistants, dental receptionists, dental hygienists, and dental laboratory technicians. They will also learn the importance of their role as a dental assistant including making dental treatments comfortable for patients of any culture or generation by understanding those patients’ psychological backgrounds and paradigms concerning dentistry. Students will learn and apply appropriate communication skills for key and successful patient interactions by utilizing listening and verbal and non- verbal communication to overcome defense mechanisms to meet patient needs.

DNA 105Dental Law & Ethics1

This course addresses the daily decisions that require judgements regarding legal and ethical principles. Students will learn the importance of always maintaining a professional and ethical standard and the consequences of unethical actions in the dental office. Students will learn state requirements to become licensed to perform specific dental duties and responsibilities. This course emphasizes that a dental assistant must thoroughly understand the law and the expanded functions of the Dental Practice Act to protect the patient, the dentist, and the profession. As dental health care continues to change, students will learn how the law affects these changes and how to work proficiently within the law and scope of practice. HIPPA regulations and requirements are taught as it the responsibility of the dental team members to protect the patient’s information.

DNA 120Dental Preclinical Skills3

In this course students will learn how to safeguard against pathogenic microorganisms exposed during a dental procedure, students will also learn that as a dental assistant they must understand how pathogens cause diseases in a susceptible person. This course will provide an understanding about pathogenic organisms along with the diseases they cause and how the body can defend against them. This course will the emphasize infection control as a critical function and the importance of maintaining a safe workplace. Students will gain an understanding of patients with physical, sensory, and intellectual disabilities and how to manage patients with special needs and those who are mentally compromised and who require special care. Students will learn the importance of attention to detail and identifying patients medical and dental history, accurate assessment and documentation of drugs used by patients by becoming knowledgeable about pharmacology, the side effects of drugs, and drug interactions.
