Online-asynchronous/2 credits/Spring semester Offered by Royal College of Music This module considers the history and practices of improvisation in Western music before 1600 (with a particular focus on Italian practices in music and philosophy). It focuses on cultural, social, and musical contexts to extend the learning experience of those already engaged in improvisation, and introduces perspectives not currently covered in practical courses in order to offer ideas that can enrich their creative practice. To do this, each Online Learning Unit will explore an aspect of early modern improvisation that suggests insights into methods transferrable into contemporary practice. Each synchronous session will use a particular critical thinking focus to help contextualize, compare, analyze, and apply those methods to those transferrable areas of your personal practice. One of the synchronous sessions will include a guest workshop exploring some of these techniques in improvisation so students can trial these techniques themselves.

Online-asynchronous/2 credits/Fall semester Offered by Conservatorium von Amsterdam Texture is one of the most important elements of music, but also one of the least understood ones. In the twentieth century, the term became widely used in musicians’ discourse, yet even today, a formal understanding of musical texture is lacking. During the course, we will examine texture as a perceptual phenomenon, engage in composition assignments, and analyse relevant compositions. The course is suitable for composers, Jazz musicians, performers, and music theorists. Students will engage in lively discussions where they will be r encouraged to rely on their intuition and areas of expertise to develop a personal understanding of the topic. Online-asynchronous/2 credits/Fall Semester Offered by Royal Danish Academy of Music If you would like to add art songs from Denmark to your recital repertoire, here’s the chance to do so. We will be working with repertoire from the anthology “Danish Diction in Art Song” which contains scores, translations (lyric and word to word), IPA written directly into the scores, and biographies of the composers. The anthology is available for free online at danishdictioninartsong.dk or for purchase through the publisher. Through the asynchronous and synchronous sessions, you will be introduced to the historical and cultural context of these Danish art songs and receive coaching in language and musical interpretation. The course is open to singers and pianists. Knowledge of IPA is not a prerequisite.

Recent developments in AI pose both profound opportunities and challenges to musicians and audiences across the globe. This module introduces students to the field of Music and AI through a musicological lens by surveying current technologies, their associated issues, and potential consequences for the future of music and society, focusing on the areas of production, consumption, and aesthetics. Topics include Generative AI in music production; AI artists; AI slop, music recommendation, curation, and streaming systems; vocal and artist likeness licensing; issues of copyright, labour, authorship, originality, and cultural appropriation.
