In their ever-growing popularity, graphic novels have become a dynamic medium to explore both ordinary and serious topics, such as love, memory, culture, history, trauma, identity, gender, and sexuality. At the same time, graphic novels offer the advanced language-learner an accessible and expressive means to engage with German literature through both text and image. This intercultural history of the Grimms’ fairy tales investigates how folktale types and gender stereotypes developed and became models for children and adults. The course covers the literary fairy tale in Germany, Europe and America. “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Cinderella”, or “Sleeping Beauty” exist not only in the Grimms’ collection but in many forms of world literature/film.
