COM 320Rhetoric

Looking at the process of human communication, we concede that language is symbolic. The study of how words and their arrangement convey shared meaning is referred to as rhetoric. Formalized during the Classical period, the theory and practice of rhetoric was cultivated during the Medieval period, through the Italian Renaissance, on through the Modern and Contemporary periods. Students will be grounded in this history of rhetoric. This course will expose students to texts, films, visual texts, letters, advertisements, and speeches as rhetorical situations. Instruction in the process of rhetorical analysis and argumentation will allow students to write analytical, argumentative, and source-based compositions. In addition, students will use this process to write and deliver speeches and to participate in debates. The course will also introduce various rhetorical devices, which will assist students in the four aims of rhetoric: to persuade, to inform, to express, and to entertain.
