CARE 1620Internship 12

Career and Internship Services Students will engage in a professional-level work experience relevant to their area of interest within the business of fashion. For Internship 1, this is often an opportunity for students to test out their intended career before fully committing to it. The details of this work-based learning experience will be agreed upon by the student in conjunction with the course instructor and the internship site supervisor. The experience must be a real-world application of classroom knowledge that allows students to explore the industry, acquire valuable job skills, build professional relationships, and focus on and refine their career goals. Students will engage in weekly class meetings (in-person or online) and assignments to reflect on and analyze their internship experiences. The instructor will support and guide students through their internships by providing professional development opportunities and encouraging peer-to-peer learning to help them make the most of their internships. Students will present an analysis of their internship experience at the end of the semester. credit(s): 2

Career and Internship Services Students will sometimes find an amazing internship opportunity outside of their normal course sequence for which the employer requires the student to earn credit. Or an employer may need work done on-demand and want an LIM student to complete a short-term professional assignment or project. This course exists to help students take advantage of these experiences to demonstrate their abilities while building their portfolio and earning elective academic credit. A student must complete a minimum total number of hours of work to earn credit; however, these hours can be earned through multiple projects or with a single experience. This course cannot replace or be taken concurrently with the required internship courses (Internship 1 (CARE 1620/1622), Internship 2 (CARE 2620/2622), or Senior Co-op (CARE 4820/4821/4822). It also may not be taken after completing Senior Co-op (CARE 4820/4821/4822). credit(s): 1

CARE 2620Internship 22

Career and Internship Services For their second internship, students either explore a different area of interest or dive deeper into their chosen specialty by taking on more significant responsibilities, more rigorous and impactful projects, or even managerial responsibilities. Having already successfully completed a prior internship, students are equipped with the professional skills and additional knowledge to be competent contributors. As with the prior internship, the details of this work-based learning experience will be agreed upon by the student in conjunction with the course instructor and the internship site supervisor. The experience must be a real-world application of classroom knowledge that allows students to explore the industry, acquire valuable job skills, build professional relationships, and focus on and refine their career goals. Students will engage in weekly class meetings (in-person or online) and assignments to reflect on and analyze their current internships, in addition to contrasting them with their prior internship experiences. The instructor will support and guide students through their internships by providing professional development opportunities and encouraging peer-to-peer learning to help them make the most of their internships. Students will present an analysis of their internship experience at the end of the semester. credit(s): 2

Career and Internship Services By their senior year, students have already had several career education opportunities through their internships and are ready to emulate a full-time work experience through their Senior Coop. Career and Internship Services With clear career goals and a proven ability to be successful academically and professionally, our students engage in an ‘entry-level equivalent’ work opportunity for their culminating senior year experience. This culminating experience is both rigorous and significant. Over the course of the semester, students will complete a minimum of 380 hours of high-level work in their chosen career field. The student, the college, and the employer will develop and document an individualized plan for the student, emphasizing important learning objectives relevant to the student’s career goals. Our employer partners often use co-op as a pipeline to test out a promising candidate for full-time employment after graduation. In addition to assignments and discussions reflecting on and analyzing the current co-op experience and each student’s career journey, thus far, the course will continue building on each student’s job search preparation and career discovery process. While success can be defined in many ways, this course is designed to prepare you, a future professional, to effectively navigate the process of identifying and securing a meaningful career. Through the readings, practice activities, hearing from guest speakers, and exploring the array of career resources at LIM College, the ultimate goal of this course is to help you become confident in your ability to secure a professional level job after college, and achieve the next step in your professional development. credit(s): 6
