NUR 1001Fundamentals of Nursing8

Course Fee: $525. The role of the Associate Degree Nurse, as a provider of care and as a member within the discipline of nursing, is introduced utilizing Patricia Benner’s Model of Novice to Expert Model. Students explore content related to the nursing process and critical thinking as a foundation to nursing practice. The first part of the course emphasizes the introduction of the use of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Watson’s Caring and Kubler-Ross theories as foundational nursing. The latter part of the course focuses on the introduction and application of the nursing process with these theories directed primarily toward the older adult in the acute and chronic care setting. Interventions that include effective therapeutic oral communication, cultural sensitivity to promote healthful client outcomes and human flourishing are explored. The student will self- evaluate their oral communication with patients and recognize where improvements in dialog can be made. In clinical placements the student will engage in and improve oral communications with clinicians, and other members of the healthcare team to inform them of medical conditions to determine potential treatment modalities. In addition, the student will evaluate and improve their ability to engage in inclusive oral communication with family members, as appropriate, to ensure patient-centered care planning. In the lab the students will be taught basic nursing skills. Prerequisite(s): SCI 1124 Principles of Biology I, ENG 1001 Composition I.
