EVST 101Introduction to Environmental Studies3
EVST 101 is a foundational course for all Environmental Studies students. It will provide a broad background in the science of environmental issues which affect climate change. Issues will include air and water pollution, ocean acidifications, ways to improve carbon footprinting and overall reduction, recycling and reuse proposals. Methods to study these issues will be reviewed with a focus on information literacy, scientific veracity, and critical thinking. Later in the course, faculty from related disciplines will present and discuss the impact of these scientific challenges to the need for stewardship, advocacy, and policy changes. These aspects will reflect potential areas of study in all three discipline tracks.
EVST 200 is a foundational course for all Environmental Studies students. It will provide a comprehensive and interdisciplinary look at the problem of climate change. The course will begin with an examination of the science, and then will mve to a discussion and analysis of our various ethical obligations (individual, national, international, intergenerational, etc) in this context, with a strong emphasis placed on identifying and considering the interests of the most vulnerable. The course will close with an exploration of how these ethical concerns can be addressed in policy and advocacy around climate change.
EVST 499 will require the student to select a relevant topic among the three tracks and to develop an original proposal and contribution to the conversation on this topic. These topics can be individual or be a group project depending on the scope and complexity of the proposal. Information literacy skills will help to identify the knowledge gap on the topic. Proposals may involve interventions in science, the humanities or justice. An original research paper and oral presentation will be the deliverables, as well as presentation at a research forum on environmental reform or intervention.
