This course introduces students to the general contours of Ukrainian culture and civilization, tracing its evolution from ancient origins to the present. It explores the development of the Ukrainian nation, as well as its language, literature, folklore, religion, music, art, and film. While the primary focus is on culture, key historical contexts are integrated throughout to provide a deeper understanding and interpretation of Ukraine's cultural heritage. The course also features selected readings from some of the most renowned works of Ukrainian literature. No prior knowledge of Ukrainian is required, as all lectures, discussions, and readings are conducted in English.

This is a survey of classical works of Ukrainian literature, from its genesis of in the late seventeenth century to present. Designed with a diverse audience in mind, from a complete novice to a more seasoned reader, the course pays special attention to the intersection of literature and Ukraine's centuries-long struggle for its cultural and political liberation and independence. Far from being limited to political themes, course materials offer a great deal of variety, including much humor, lyricism, fantasy, and experimentation.
