By-Pass or Challenge Examinationsprior_learningExperiential Learning Credit for prior learning includes any mechanism in which a currently enrolled UT Southern student may be granted college-level credit in non-credit or experiential settings. Course credit earned for prior learning experience will be recorded on the student’s transcript with the grade of “P.” Students may not seek prior learning experience credits for courses that they have previously enrolled in and dropped, or for courses that they have failed. Credit will be awarded in the various subject areas as follows: AP Exam AP Score Hours Credit Course Equivalency American History 4 or higher 6 HIS 201 , HIS 202 Art History 3 or higher 3 ART 121 Art 2D Design 3 or higher 3 ART 111 Biology 4 or higher 8 BIO 111 , BIO 112 Calculus AB 4 or higher 4 MAT 142 Calculus BC 4 or higher 4 MAT 241 Chemistry 4 or higher 4 CHE 111 Computer Science A 3 or higher 3 CS 110 Computer Science Principles 3 or higher 3 CS 110 English/Language & Composition 4 or higher 6 ENG 101 , ENG 102 English/Literature & Composition 4 or higher 6 ENG 201 , ENG 202 Environmental Science 4 or higher 4 Science 100-level European History 4 or higher 6 HIS 111 , HIS 112 French, Spanish, German 4 or higher 6 FLG 100 level Macroeconomics 3 or higher 3 BUS 201 Microeconomics 3 or higher 3 BUS 202 Music Theory 4 or higher 3 MUS 101 Physics C: Mechanics 4 or higher 4 PHY 251 Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism 4 or higher 4 PHY 252 Precalculus 3 or higher 5 MAT 141 Psychology 3 or higher 3 PSY 113 Statistics 4 or higher 3 MAT 231 US Government and Politics 4 or higher 3 HIS 221 World History 4 or higher 6 HIS 111 , HIS 112 Statewide Dual Credit Course Course Minimum Score UT Southern Credit American History II 80 HIS 202 Criminal Justice 80 CJ 101 Introduction to Agriculture Business 80 LL Elective Introduction to Business 80 BUS 101 Introduction to Education 80 LL Elective Introduction to Plant Science 80 LL Elective Introduction to Sociology 80 SOC 211 Introduction to Statistics 80 MAT 231 Precalculus 80 MAT 141 Principles of Marketing 80 LL Elective Psychology 80 PSY 113 Speech and Communications 80 COMM 221 World History 80 HIS 112 International Baccalaureate Credit Credit may be awarded for acceptable scores on certain subject area examinations in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program.2026-2027catalog.utsouthern.edu
ENG 103 - Honors Compositionprior_learningStudents who complete this course with a grade of C or better will receive three credit hours for ENG 103 and an additional three credit hours in ENG 101 for prior learning in composition, and they will have satisfied the General Education Core Writing requirement.2026-2027catalog.utsouthern.edu
Graduation Honorstransfer_creditCorrespondence courses cannot be used to satisfy any portion of the residence requirements, nor can credit gained by advanced standing examinations. Transfer Credit Policy Once students enroll in a major at the University of Tennessee Southern, they must complete a Transfer Credit Request Form for any courses at other institutions if they plan to transfer credits toward a UT Southern degree. Students who wish to register for courses at another institution must complete a Transfer Credit Request Form, provide a catalog description, the dates the course will be offered, the reason the course cannot be taken at the University of Tennessee Southern, and any other information deemed appropriate by the Provost and/or Registrar before the request will be considered.2026-2027catalog.utsouthern.edu
Records and Documents Submitted for Admission Processingtransfer_creditThe optional essays are not required for admission; the individual scores on English, math, reading, and science are used for placement. Official transcripts are required to gain full acceptance to the University: Official copy of ACT or SAT scores High school transcripts A student who has earned college credits while still in high school (dual enrollment) and has not attended college after high school graduation is considered as a new freshman regardless of the number of hours earned through dual enrollment. Certain academic programs may have special core requirements that the transfer student may be required to complete. All courses from a regionally accredited college are accepted for transfer; however, depending on a student’s major, they may not all count toward a degree. If you are a transfer student from a non-US college or university, your transcripts must be evaluated by a third-party credentialing company (WES, InCred, etc.). Students are eligible to take 6 hours per semester as a standard; a cumulative 2.0 college GPA is required to maintain dual enrollment eligibility. Additional credit for training in formal service schools will be granted on the basis of recommendations in “A Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services” or the recommendations of the Commission on Accreditation of Service Experiences, which lists equivalents to specific University of Tennessee Southern courses. (See also Credit for Prior Learning ). Verification of Enrollment Montgomery GI Bill® Students who are receiving benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill®-Active Duty, Chapter 30, or Montgomery GI Bill®-Selected Reserves, Chapter 1606 must verify their enrollment through the internet WAVE application or from a touch-tone phone.2026-2027catalog.utsouthern.edu
Standard Academic Progress Standardstransfer_creditThis means that a student’s attempted and transferred credit hours cannot exceed 150% of the credit hours necessary for completion of their primary degree or certificate.2026-2027catalog.utsouthern.edu
Transcriptstransfer_creditThe amount of time that is required to earn one semester credit hour in a laboratory, fieldwork, studio, or seminar-based course varies with the nature of the subject and the aims of the course; typically, a minimum of two or three hours of work in a laboratory, field, studio, or seminar-based setting is considered the equivalent of 50 minutes of classroom-based direct instruction. Transfer Credits The University of Tennessee Southern accepts transfer credits from other accredited institutions or those which otherwise meet the requirements for transfer credit as defined by SACS-COC. Campus-change students who meet these specifications will not be required to take any additional coursework to meet general education requirements at the campus to which they are transferring; however, specific general education courses may be required to satisfy the requirements of the major or degree program. As such, transcripts of campus-change students will be evaluated on an individual basis. See Dual Enrollment . Taking Coursework at Other Institutions A UT Southern student enrolled in a program on campus must complete a Transfer Credit Request form with the appropriate signatures before registering for any courses at other institutions if planning to transfer the courses back to the University of Tennessee Southern. Students who enroll at another accredited institution of higher education and earn 12 semester hours of transferable credit, in good academic standing with their previous institution, and have at least a 2.0 GPA may be readmitted early on post-suspension probation.2026-2027catalog.utsouthern.edu
