transfer_creditStudents should submit materials as described under the Application Requirements for First- Years or Transfers (no separate International Student application is required). Courses completed at other accredited colleges and universities, which are similar in content and depth to Barnard courses, may be submitted for transfer credit. Credit for approved work at another institution is applied to Barnard's 121-point graduation requirement for transfers. Please note that a maximum of 60 external credits that can be transferred toward a degree at Barnard College. The number of transfer credits accepted by Barnard is determined by the Office of the Registrar; students are notified of their credit status at the time of admission. Credit cannot be granted for courses with grades lower than C-. Online classes taken in Spring 2020 and subsequent semesters will be considered for transfer credit if taken prior to a student's matriculation at Barnard. Specific criteria for online courses to be considered for transfer credit can be found on the Registrar's webpage.2025-2026catalog.barnard.edu
transfer_creditCredit for summer courses taken at other accredited institutions (including Columbia) requires approval by a student’s adviser and/or department chair and the Registrar’s Office. If approved, these courses are treated as transfer credit; the courses display on the Barnard transcript but are not factored into the Barnard GPA calculation. Barnard’s standard policies around transfer credit apply to summer coursework, including the requirement that a student must earn a grade of C- or better in a course in order to transfer credit. (Students on required leave of absence should reference the terms of their required leave letter and consult with their class dean.) Online Courses Students may not earn transfer credit for online classes taken at other colleges or universities after matriculating at Barnard. Prior-to-Barnard credit for students entering as first-year students First-year students with a record of prior coursework taken as non- matriculants at an accredited, degree-granting college or university may request up to 15 points of transfer credit.2025-2026catalog.barnard.edu
transfer_creditTransfer students who are not required to take an examination are notified of language placement along with the evaluation of their transfer credit. Summer School Language Courses Students–other than incoming transfer or first-year students–who take summer language courses and wish to use them to satisfy or determine placement in their continuing language studies may be required to secure departmental approval to receive degree credit and continue at a higher level.2025-2026catalog.barnard.edu
transfer_creditBarnard students may not elect P/D/F in a Columbia Summer Session course because Columbia summer courses are considered transfer credit, and transfer courses must have a standard letter grade in order to transfer.2025-2026catalog.barnard.edu
transfer_creditRequirements for Transfer Students A student admitted to Barnard with fewer than 24 points of credit is considered a first-year student and is subject to all requirements for first-year students, including First-Year Writing and First-Year Seminar. A student admitted with 24 credits or more is considered a transfer student. Transfer students are eligible for Latin honors when the Barnard grade point average meets the required academic standards. Transfer students entering with 24 or more points must complete 121 points for the Barnard degree, one point of which is for PE. Transfer Credit Courses completed at other accredited colleges and universities which are similar in content and depth to Barnard courses may be submitted for transfer credit. Transfer courses are evaluated after a complete official transcript is received in the Office of the Registrar. Students are asked to submit course descriptions with their requests for transfer credit to the Admissions Office.2025-2026catalog.barnard.edu
transfer_creditStudents may not earn transfer credit for online classes taken at other colleges or universities after matriculating at Barnard. This includes credit taken in approved study abroad or exchange programs; credit taken while on leave of absence from the College; and credit taken during summer or winter sessions For online classes taken prior to a student’s matriculation at Barnard, the following policies apply: Online classes taken in spring 2020 and subsequent semesters will be considered for transfer credit, subject to the applicable policies/ approvals. In addition to the general requirements that apply to all transfer credit, online courses must also meet the following criteria to be considered for transfer credit: • Online courses must be offered by a regionally accredited college or university, and must be applicable to an undergraduate degree at that school. For that reason, MOOCs and other non-credit or credit- optional courses (e.g., edX, Coursera, Udacity, etc.) are not eligible for transfer credit.2025-2026catalog.barnard.edu
transfer_creditCourses taken at institutions abroad other than Columbia-led programs are treated as transfer credit. Courses taken while on non- Barnard summer study abroad programs are treated as transfer credit. In both cases, courses taken at the Jewish Theological Seminary are evaluated as transfer credit, and are subject to the College’s policies on transfer credit limits and requirements. Like other types of transfer credit, grades from JTS courses are not factored into the Barnard GPA and do not count towards College honors such as dean’s list and Latin honors at the point of graduation.2025-2026catalog.barnard.edu
transfer_creditTransfer Credit When students wish to transfer credit to Barnard from other institutions, their coursework is first evaluated for college elective credit by the Registrar’s Office. If those courses are approved for transfer credit, departments can consider whether these courses fulfill specific requirements for the major. The architecture department doesn’t accept transfer credit toward the minor. Students requesting a review of up to three courses toward major requirements that are from their approved transfer credits should refer to our Request for Exemption from Architecture Major or Minor Requirements form. Classes taken abroad through other institutions or programs are treated as transfer credit and are subject to the same policies as other transfer courses. Accordingly, there will be a limit on the number of study abroad courses taken at other institutions that can be counted toward the major or minor.2025-2026catalog.barnard.edu
transfer_creditCourses taken at other institutions (including Columbia) are considered transfer credit and are subject to the same policies governing other transfer courses. Transfer Credit When students transfer to Columbia from other institutions, their coursework at their previous institution must first be considered by their school in order to be evaluated for degree credit (e.g., to confirm that the courses will count toward the 124 points of credit that every student is required to complete for the B.A. The architecture department doesn’t accept transfer credit toward the minor. Students requesting a review of up to three courses toward major requirements that are from their approved transfer credits should refer to our Request for Exemption from Architecture Major or Minor Requirements form. Transfer Credittransfer_creditTransfer Credit There are two steps in obtaining approval for courses taken at another institution. First, you must receive Barnard College credit for the course from the Registrar. Second, you must obtain approval via Slate from the Psychology Department Vice Chair for Student Advising to count the course toward your major requirements. (Approval from the Registrar will ensure College credit, but will not ensure that the course can count toward the major.) Students already enrolled at Barnard who plan to fulfill major requirements with a course from another institution are strongly encouraged to seek approval from the Department Vice Chair for Student Advising prior to filing their program. This applies to summer courses (including those taken at Columbia), courses taken abroad, and courses taken at institutions other than Barnard or Columbia during the fall and spring semesters. Also, note that transfer students follow the requirements (major and College/Gen Ed) that correspond to the year they entered Barnard (and not their class year). Students may not earn transfer credit for online classes taken at other colleges or universities after matriculating at Barnard. This includes credit taken in approved study abroad or exchange programs; credit taken while on leave of absence from the College; and credit taken during summer or winter sessions For online classes taken prior to a student’s matriculation at Barnard, the following policies apply: Online classes taken in spring 2020 and subsequent semesters will be considered for transfer credit, subject to the applicable policies/approvals. In addition to the general requirements that apply to all transfer credit, online courses must also meet the following criteria to be considered for transfer credit: Online courses must be offered by a regionally accredited college or university, and must be applicable to an undergraduate degree at that school. For that reason, MOOCs and other non-credit or credit-optional courses (e.g., edX, Coursera, Udacity, etc.) are not eligible for transfer credit. Online courses must be offered during a defined term/session, with a definite beginning and end date, and may not be self-paced or entirely asynchronous. Online courses must have structured progression through course material.
