EMST 102Emergency Medical Technician Certification Prep6

(3 lecture, 3 lab, plus 16 patient contact hours) Course Description This course will provide basic training in all aspects of emergency medical care that an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is permitted to provide throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This course will follow the current National Education Standard for the Emergency Medical Technician. Upon successfully meeting the completion criteria, the student will be eligible to take the psychomotor and cognitive examinations as offered through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Successful completion of the exams is not guaranteed. Students must maintain a 70% cumulative grade throughout class and examinations to meet national registry standards for certification testing. Child abuse, FBI fingerprint, and criminal history clearances are necessary. Prerequisite AHEA 280, AHEA 110, and PSYC 201 Text Mistovich, J. J. & Karren, K. J. (2017). B. Demonstrate safe and proper assessment and treatment of patients. C. Write a patient care report to accurately document patient assessment findings and treatment plan. D. Identify various treatment plans based on disease processes and patient symptoms in accordance with National Registry Scope of Practice and Pennsylvania Department of Health Protocols. E. Operate effectively with all personnel in a live, clinical environment as a professional clinician. Content A. Medical, legal and ethical issues. B. Well-being of the EMT. C. Lifting and moving. D. Airway, respiration and artificial ventilation. E. Cardiac arrest management. F. Respiratory emergencies. G. Bleeding and shock. H. Highway safety and vehicle rescue. I. Chest and abdominal trauma. J. Soft tissue trauma. K. Hazmat. L. Multisystem trauma and environmental emergencies. Student Evaluation Objectives A-E will be assessed with quizzes, exams, demonstrations, and psycho-motor skills testing.

(1 lecture, 8 work hours per week) Course Description This is a supervised EMS work experience designed to allow the student to grow professionally, identify strengths and weaknesses, and apply learned theory to practical situations. The student will gain an appreciation of the roles, duties, responsibilities, and nature of the work that has been chosen as a career. Prerequisite EMT Certification and ENGL 101 or ENGL 110.
