GHPH 76401Foundations in Public Health - This hybrid course introduces public health theory and concepts

describing the scientific foundation of public health. It examines the purpose, history, organization, functions, activities, and outcomes of public health practice at the global, national, state, and local community levels. Prominent historical events of public health and current day debates will open the student to the evolution of public health. This course provides an overview of the cornerstones of public health: epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, behavioral and community health and health policy. At the conclusion of this course, the successful student will have an appreciation for public health theoretical concepts and the foundations by which public health cultivated into the comprehensive, applied health field it is today.

GHPH 80601Integrated Learning Experience - The Integrated Learning experience (ILE) is an opportunity for MSPH

students to synthesize and integrate knowledge acquired in coursework and other learning experiences and to apply theory and principles in a situation that approximates some aspect of professional public health practice. Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy Foundational Courses MSPH 210/SGHC 504 Political Determinants of Health (3 hours): This course introduces students to the political underpinnings of the health ecosystem, examining the fundamental causes and drivers of population health outcomes. By studying the political contexts of the health ecosystem, students will explore the interface of civic engagement, advocacy, government, law/policy, commercial interests, health reform, and health equity movements. By understanding the political determinants of health, their origins, and their impact on the equitable distribution of opportunities and resources, administration of power, and structuring relationships, health leaders and scholars will be better equipped to develop and implement actionable solutions to close the health gap including promoting, implementing, and sustaining effective public and private policies that can advance the needle in achieving health equity. MSHE 300/SGHC 500 Health Disparities and Health Equity (3 hours): This course offers perspectives into the complex dimensions of health inequities and provides a critical examination of the factors that create, perpetuate, and exacerbate health inequities. This course focuses on contemporary theories, methods, and applications of health inequities research, interventions, and practice. Using a multicultural perspective, students will examine the historical, ethical, and legal issues that influence health disparities and health equity. Analyses of primary literature will be integrated throughout the course to facilitate discussion and provide examples of methodologies in the field. MSHE 310/SGHC 501 Social, Mental, and Behavioral Health (3 hours): This course provides an overview of the social, psychosocial, behavioral, and sociocultural determinants of health. Specific emphasis on mental health--an often-overlooked topic--as well as the ecological model of community health problem analysis and development of equitable interventions provides concrete understanding. Course content organized around competencies (set out by the Association of Schools of Public Health) in the social and behavioral sciences includes selected social and behavioral theories and models used by public health professionals to plan, implement, and evaluate program strategies and policies for the improvement of community health. After successfully completing this course, students will be prepared to advocate for policy and systemic change for mental health and substance use treatment organizations as well integration with other health systems. 144
