GLHE 700Introduction to Humanitarian Emergencies: Embedding an Equitable Response : U.S3

History is replete with examples where emergency management responses to crises and disasters have rarely considered taking an equitable approach. For communities that are already under-resourced and historically marginalized, this injustice translates into an even greater loss when disaster strikes. Yet, this does not have to be the case. This course introduces the student to different types of humanitarian emergencies, humanitarian architecture and provides an overview of sectoral focus areas of humanitarian response. The course informs students of the environment in which these emergencies occur and how public health responses in various types of emergencies and contexts differ. This course not only explores mechanisms of preparedness, management of response to humanitarian emergencies, and long-term recovery, but it also emphasizes the importance of embedding equity into the equation, so that responses can become more just and fairer, especially for communities that are most in need.

GLHE 701Global Health Diplomacy – Diplomacy in the Modern World : The Global Health Diplomacy3

course is intended to provide students with exposure to the development and practice of diplomatic relations when working abroad by creating pathways for students to apply their knowledge globally, advance health equity research through collaboration, and contribute to equitable and inclusive global health policy. Global health equity leaders must have a basic understanding the multi-level processes that shape and manage the global health policy environment and how to establish, build, and maintain relationships within the context of dynamic political environments as this is crucial for carrying out operations and reaching targeted goals regardless of the field of practice. Building on the foundational knowledge and skills from PGHE 400 Introduction to Negotiations and Practice, the course will be carried out over several modules and led by instructors with first-hand, real world experience in international affairs and global diplomacy. This course will also provide the opportunity for students to connect to health equity champions across the globe. Prerequisite: Introduction to Negotiations and Practice

GLHE 702Global Disease Epidemiology and Control : In this course, students will learn the biologic3

basis of communicable and non-communicable diseases as a means of understanding pathogen identification, case determination, disease transmission, and possible interventions including vaccine development. In addition, students will review the methodologies employed to quantify and investigate outbreaks on a global scale, and understand disease dynamics. Students also receive an overview of response activities including communicating outbreak information as it evolves over the course of the outbreak, development of prevention and intervention activities and the governmental and public health policies (such as those that guide quarantine laws, drug development, emergency response, and so on) that can serve as guides to effective prevention. While mainly in lecture format, this course will also use global case studies in order to enhance understanding and analysis of in-depth investigations of key outbreaks providing students the necessary skill set to employ in the field. GLHE 712A Needs Assessment Approach using GIS and Community Mapping : There are many3

ways to look at a community's health and its viability. Identifying a community's existing resources is one such way and is pivotal for advancing equity and health outcomes for all populations living within that community. This course focuses on one key subcomponent of the political determinants of health framework; the distribution of resources. Using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) as a tool, students will learn approaches to: quantitatively and qualitatively define public health problems; setting a community agenda by prioritizing distinct public health problems; engage the community in assessing local capacity to address those problems; visualizing those problems with Geographic Information Systems; and presenting the results of their assessment to audiences of decision makers and the public. Ultimately, real world application of this useful skill will aid students in advocating for their causes and communities.

GLHE 713Introduction to Negotiations and Practice : Being a skillful negotiator is paramount for turning3

ideas into actions. While many may believe they are only useful in business, the truth is that strong negotiation skills can help us navigate through some of the toughest of circumstances, such as avoiding/resolving conflict, advancing in the workplace, and creating value. Negotiations are ubiquitous, permeating our daily interactions whether in business, international affairs, government, organizations, or our personal relationships. Thus, analytic and interpersonal negotiation skills are essential for creating value, operational capacity, legitimacy, and support for crucial decisions and collective action. At the same time, negotiators often confront resistance from well-resourced adversaries, information asymmetries, psychological biases, and constant change. Students need to be able to anticipate barriers to agreement, assess no-deal alternatives, diagnose and interpret underlying interests, in addition to applying evidence-based techniques to advance our interests and the interests of those who rely on us. This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of negotiation analysis and practice. Prerequisite: Global Health Diplomacy – Diplomacy in the Modern World
