An introduction to exercise science as a field of study. This course addresses human movement as it applies to prevention, health, performance, treatment, and rehabilitation. Course content includes an overview of exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, sociocultural aspects of sport and exercise, strength and conditioning, motor development, and biomechanics. Exercise testing and prescription for patients/clients with specific diseases or conditions. The associated pathophysiology, risk factors, exercise responses, and issues of concern will be discussed as they relate to children, pregnancy, older adults and those with disease(s) involving the cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, and immunologic systems. Although the usual internship will carry either three or six hours credit, a student may elect to arrange an internship carrying between two and six hours credit with the permission of the department.
