In-depth study and practice of oral storytelling, with a focus on Appalachian regional and world folklore traditions, as well as contemporary storytelling – with an emphasis on original story performance and live performance techniques. Puppetry is one of the oldest means of communication, with puppets being found in funerary and ancient performance spaces going back hundreds of years. Performance objects and puppetry allows us to speak what cannot be spoken by a typical member of society, and are an ongoing part of our culture. This course allows students to carry on this human tradition of object and puppet performance with an approach to oral interpretation.
