IDS 1900Travel: South Africa and Eswatini

This travel course to South Africa and Eswatini will explore the cultural, political, economic, historical, social, and health care systems found in these African nations. Students enrolling in this course are required to co-register for one of several linked courses (details provided by the Study Abroad Office each year) that provide each student with a foundation from a variety of department offerings that will provide context during the ~two week trip in May. The course will meet once a week during the spring semester in preparation for the trip, drawing from a variety of written and visual works, as well as invited guest speakers. During the trip, each night will include time for student-led reflection on the day’s experiences, as well as a daily diary of personal observations. Registration for IDS 1900 with travel to South Africa and Eswatini requires co-registration with one of the following 4-credit courses: BIOL 2115 Determinants of Health and Disease

IDS 2410Sustainability Science4

(cross listed with PHYS2410) Scientific Inquiry with Laboratory (SI-L) This course provides an introduction to the science of sustainability and to selected issues in sustainable development. We fill focus on topics that are of major importance to Indonesia: (1) deforestation, (2) urbanization, and (3) depletion of marine resources. We will study three geographical regions of Indonesia as case studies: Borneo (deforestation), Java (urbanization), and Bali (the oceans). We will examine the causes of these processes and their effects on people and the environment. Proposals for sustainable solutions to the problems posed will also be evaluated. In the travel component of this course we will visit these regions to see the facts on the ground and how Indonesians are trying to find their own solutions. Spring semester, even years.
