Practicum II is the second of the two experiential learning courses required to graduate the MS/EdS degree program. To be eligible to take Practicum II, students must successfully complete and pass Practicum I (BEHV 471), and work at the university-approved site (approved in BEHV 470), with the university-approved supervisor (approved in BEHV 470), completing a minimum of 20 supervised behavior analytic experience hours per month (minimum of 45 hours per semester). In addition to accruing experience hours, students receive didactic instruction and supervision weekly to develop clinical and research skills, and students complete a thesis research project across the two terms of Practicum. During Practicum II, students will implement their thesis research project (according to the protocol approved by their thesis committee and ethics boards during Practicum I), collect and analyze the research data, and defend their thesis, completing both a written report (in APA format) and an oral presentation and defense of the research. Students may not graduate the MS/EdS degree program without successfully completing Practicum II, including the thesis defense.

This course provides an overview of the history, characteristics, and treatments associated with autism spectrum disorders. Specifically, the student will review research, systems, and interventions documenting the evidence-based, best-practice approach of applied behavior analysis. Additionally, the student will learn how to collect and evaluate assessment data before the onset of intervention in order to develop relevant and efficacious treatments. Finally, the student will demonstrate the abilities to empirically and objectively evaluate behavior analytic treatment via single-subject research designs and then communicate these results, in writing and orally, to both scientific and lay audiences.

The Social Work Practicum Placement and Seminar I is designed for the senior social work student to integrate classroom learning with practical social work experience in an agency setting. Throughout the semester, students complete 16 hours of practicum placement per week to fulfill the 425-hour, year-long BSW senior practicum requirement. In addition, students meet weekly for live sessions, each lasting 1 hour and 20 minutes, as part of the practicum seminar. Through reflective discussions, weekly assignments, and process recordings, the Practicum Seminar focuses on integrating theory and practice, building the student’s professional social work identity, enhancing self-awareness skills, advancing practice competencies, and synthesizing learning from the practicum. All aspects of agency practicum work, including learning to work within the agency context, effectively utilizing supervision, using research to inform practice, applying social work values and ethics, and integrating social work knowledge and skills with clients, are addressed.

Competency-Based Curriculum Model: Combining Classroom Learning and Practicum Education

In alignment with the Council on Social Work Education’s Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards, the Simmons BSW Program utilizes a competency-based educational model that combines classroom learning with practicum education. Within this model, students are provided opportunities to gradually master the knowledge, values, and skills necessary for effective, competent, ethical social work practice. BSW students integrate the College’s liberal arts foundation with required social work courses which focus on the fundamentals of professional generalist social work, including human behavior in the social environment, social welfare history, policy analysis, advocacy, practice methods, social science research, diversity and cultural competence, and critical thinking and writing. Of equal importance to the course-work component of the curriculum, BSW students receive formal practicum training which connects and reinforces classroom learning with the social work practice setting. Supporting and advancing student’s learning and growth, the BSW Program curriculum includes service-learning requirements and formal, supervised practicum placements in the junior (100 hours, completed virtually for the Complete Degree program) and senior years (425 hours). Practicum placements occur in a variety of social service settings, serving various populations of people in need who are facing complex problems and circumstances. The synergistic integration of classroom and practicum work allows Simmons University BSW graduates to develop competency in the key areas of generalist social work practice, readying them for the workforce, graduate level study, and LSW licensure.
