AH 201Introduction to Applied Humanities
Humanities explores the human condition, including our relationships and cultural values, to deepen self-understanding and empathy. You will explore philosophy, history, literature, and creative arts, engage with political, cultural, and social ideas, and develop research methods to address real-world issues. The course includes an Applied Project assignment where you'll design a project to meet a client or community's needs.
In this course, students will design and deliver a “capstone” project that applies humanities- based methodologies to a practical problem or issue in the real world. Completion of the project and accompanying reflective essay will involve careful analysis of the focal issue’s historical, ethical, and cultural aspects, requiring students to synthesize the knowledge they have mastered in completing the Applied Humanities degree. The course will culminate with students publicly presenting their projects with posters, lightning talks, or other formats approved by their advisor and the Capstone Committee.
The Applied Humanities internship/experiential learning requirement offers students a hands- on experience in integrating humanities disciplines with real-world applications. Participants will engage in projects that emphasize critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills while collaborating with various organizations. Through mentorship and practical assignments, students will develop valuable insights into how humanities can address contemporary societal challenges.
