A su rvey course designed to analyze the social construction of gender. Accounts of the historical, social and psychological underpinnings of gender w i l l be covered. Special emphasis w i l l be given to the changes occ u rring i n contemporary society regard i ng gender roles and their elements. No prerequisite.
A general su rvey of native American cultures with emphasis on cultural development, diversity, and comparative analysis. Topics i nclude prehistory, social organization, kin ship, po l itics, rel igion, and material c u l tu re, as well as d i scussion of c u rrent Native American concerns.
A general su rvey of the historical and cultural development of the region of Southern lI Appalachia. Emphasis w i l l be pl aced on topics such as physiography, native Americans, historical settlement, rivers and transportation, fol klore and crafts, farm ing and mining activities, and political and social developments. This course w i l l include field trips to significant sites such as Cades Cove in the G reat Smoky Mountains, the Blue Heron l mining community i n the Big South Fork National Recreation Area, and the Museum of Appa lachia i n Norris.
