| prior_learning | Master of Divinity / Master of Social Work Dual-Degree Program MSW: Sixty-two (62) credit hours are required, and of these 29 are Generalist and 33 are Specialization credits. 12-month Advanced Standing MSW students (who are already experiencing the reduction of a year at the UNC School of Social Work) will be eligible for the dual degree program. In order to complete the MDiv/MSW paradigm with their cohorts, the Advanced Standing students will take one course credit less at Duke (19 credits total) than the other students in the dual-degree program. Advanced Standing students may reduce their required coursework by three credit hours when they enter the School of Social Work, taking 37 credit hours total. The Advanced Standing students will be required to take both of Duke’s Field Education Placements. | 2026 | divinity.duke.edu | |

| transfer_credit | The school may offer individualized instruction, such as independent studies or individualized field education, provided it meets the first two components and is limited to meeting appropriate student needs or particular degree program requirements, but not an entire degree (Policies and Procedures, IV.F, prohibits correspondence education). 3.12 The school has and follows a public transfer of credit policy that clearly identifies the criteria by which it evaluates transfer credits from other graduate schools and the maximum amount of transfer credits it accepts for its degree programs, which may not exceed two-thirds of the program’s total credits. 3.13 Any school with reduced-credit options for master’s degrees (through some form of advanced standing, shared credits, or combined undergraduate/graduate degrees) has clearly stated policies with appropriate criteria for doing so in ways that ensure the integrity and learning outcomes of the degree program. Advanced standing may not exceed one-third of the degree being sought; shared credits between degrees may not exceed two-thirds of the degree receiving those credits; and combined undergraduate/graduate degrees may generally not count undergraduate credits as graduate credits. | 2026 | divinity.duke.edu | |
| transfer_credit | Note that for courses taken at other institutions, the restrictions on graduate student enrollment in courses intended for undergraduates apply. • As a rule, UNC courses listed at the 400-level are the equivalent of 500 level courses offered at Duke, and, therefore, are considered graduate-level courses. | 2026 | gradschool.duke.edu | |

| transfer_credit | However, if you participate in a Duke-approved study abroad program, you may be eligible to receive FL coding for a transfer course taken abroad, but only if it is taken in an immersion setting, e.g., while you are living with a host family or otherwise engaged actively with the host foreign language speaking culture. Since only two domestic courses may be transferred to your Duke academic record, at least one of these courses must be at the advanced level. For courses taken in the United States in a less commonly taught language not offered at Duke: the Registrar will add the transfer credit to your Duke transcript only when the approval form is received from your dean and an official transcript showing satisfactory completion of the course (with grade of C- or above) is received from the institution you attended. If you are granted FL coding for the transfer course, the committee will notify the Registrar so that it can be recorded on your transcript. The Registrar’s office will then add the approved study abroad transfer credit to your Duke transcript. If you are granted an FL-code for the transfer course, the committee will inform the Study Abroad office, which will post the code to the course in the Study Abroad database of approved courses and notify the Registrar’s office to post it to your record. | 2026 | trinity.duke.edu | |

| Institutional Transfer Credit Information | transfer_credit | Institutional Transfer Credit Information Departments are responsible for approving courses that count toward a major, minor, or certificate and they may have limitations on the number of non-Duke courses that will apply. If you are uncertain whether a course will apply to major, minor or certificate requirements, you should check the information on the departmental/program website or confer with the DUS or program director. If the institution attended or to be attended is outside the United States, the Global Education Office must approve the accreditation of the international institution before transfer credit will be approved. There is a place for this approval on the form. Courses must be taken and transcripted by an accredited four-year university. Courses may also not be taken from different institutions within the same summer session. You will not receive transfer credit for a course taken at a junior or community college, or for an independent study course work completed elsewhere. You will not receive transfer credit for a course if you took the course earlier at Duke, and received a grade of D-, D, or D+, unless prior approval is received by the academic dean and the Director of Undergraduate Studies for your major. A 3- or 4- semester-hour course taken elsewhere is equivalent to a 1.0 course credit at Duke. A course taken at a university on the quarter system must be 5 or 6 quarter-hours of credit to transfer as a 1.0 credit courses. Courses that are less than 3 or 4 semester hours or 5 or 6 quarter hours may on occasion be transferred as partial credit (0.5 credit) courses. You should have prospective transfer courses pre-approved so that you know if they will transfer before you invest time and expense. However, if needed, you may have courses approved after completion, but be aware that approval is not guaranteed. A course taken in the summer must meet for a period of at least four full weeks (at least 17 class meetings, excluding holidays, reading periods and final exams). See important update below regarding the London School of Economics. The limitation to one course enrollment in an intensive summer term also applies to course work taken at another institution, i.e. , you can receive no more than one course credit for enrollment in an intensive term (under six weeks in length) at another institution. Courses that transfer to Duke as a specified Duke course will carry the Area of Knowledge code(s) that a Duke course carries. Transfer courses that are approved as generic courses ( e.g. 100 for lower level, 300 for upper-level) for which there is no exact Duke equivalent course can be given an Area of Knowledge code by the Director of Undergraduate Studies who approves the content of the course for transfer. Final approval of Area of Knowledge is given by the Academic Dean. A maximum of 4.0 institutional transfer credits are allowed, whether in the summer while you are an active Duke student or while you are on personal or medical leave of absence. Further, a maximum of 2.0 institutional transfer credits are allowed while on an academic dismissal. This does not include transfer credits earned while on a study away program as an active Duke student. Once the limit of transfer credit has been reached, no additional transferred work will be added to your academic record or used as a substitute for a previously transferred course. No more than two technical courses are allowed to be taken at another institution. If two courses are taken concurrently, and the lab portion must be taken upon return to Duke, only one such course is allowed to be taken in the same term. Upon return, students have a maximum of two semesters to successfully complete the lab portion of the course back at Duke. Students who have been suspended or dismissed by the Office of Student Conduct may not transfer courses taken during the period of suspension or dismissal. Students who are on academic dismissal beginning January 2023, or later, are able to take institutional credits in their permanent place of residence ( i.e. , within the United States or student’s home country), if they do not have any outstanding Incompletes. You are expected to present a transcript from the four year college or university at which the course work was completed. Duke does not award transfer credit for so-called “third-party” transfer situations, i.e. when the school attended is not the same as the accredited four-year degree-granting institution that issues the transcript. Inter-institutional courses taken at neighboring universities are not considered as work taken at another institution, and are exempt from these transfer credit policies. | 2026 | pratt.duke.edu |
| NOTIFICATION AND AWARDING OF CREDIT | transfer_credit | For courses taken in the United States in a less commonly taught language not offered at Duke: the Registrar will add the transfer credit to your Duke transcript only when the approval form is received from your dean and an official transcript showing satisfactory completion of the course (with grade of C- or above) is received from the institution you attended. | 2026 | trinity.duke.edu |

STEP 2: Global Education Office Approval, if the University is Outside the United States If you will be attending an institution in the United States, skip to Step 3. If you will be attending a university outside the United States, you must request the Global Education Office (GEO) approval. GEO must confirm the accreditation of the international institution you wish to attend. STEP 3: Request Departmental Approval and Identification of an Equivalent Course Submit the necessary information requested on the electronic form, this includes the course description or syllabus for the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) of the department that represents the discipline to be reviewed. If the DUS approves the content of the course and determines its equivalency to a specified Duke University course, the DUS will forward the form to your academic dean, with their approval–along with the Duke equivalent course (and Area of Knowledge, if appropriate). STEP 4: Request Your Academic Dean’s Approval After you receive departmental approval, submit a screenshot or PDF of the printed schedule, showing the beginning and ending dates of when the class is taught, to your Academic Dean. In addition, a copy of the university’s academic calendar for the summer session in question. If the class is a 3-or 4-hour semester course or a 5-or 6-quarter hour course taught over a period of at least 4 full weeks, your dean will approve the course as a 1.0 credit course and will give a pre-approval. Your dean will hold the form until the final transcript is received upon successful completion of the course. If your dean does not approve, your dean will notify you. STEP 5: Complete the Course and Have the Official Transcript Sent Once you know the course has been fully approved, register for the course on a graded basis (do not enroll in pass/fail grading or for a course offered only on a pass/fail basis). Complete the course. Request an official electronic transcript from that institution emailed directly to your Academic Dean . If electronic transcripts aren’t available, then request an official transcript addressed to your Academic Dean be mailed directly to: [Your Dean’s Name] Office of Undergraduate Education Duke University Pratt School of Engineering Box 90271 Durham, NC 27708 USA Once received, the Undergraduate Education Office will request the Registrar to add the course to your Duke record. If a lab is required to be taken upon return, the transfer credit will not be posted until documentation of successful completion of the lab. You must earn a C- or better to receive Duke credit. Your grade will not be recorded and will not be included in your Duke GPA; instead the notation “TR” will be recorded on your Duke transcript in place of a grade. ThM and DMin students may not transfer courses. Requirements for any course to be transferred Courses must be graduate-level courses. Courses must be taken at ATS-accredited institution or APCE-accredited CPE program (see note on CPE units below). Course grade must be B- or better. No grade lower than a B- will be accepted. Courses taken Pass/Fail do not count. Courses completed more than five years prior to the intended date of enrollment will not be considered for transfer credit. Courses taken and counted toward a conferred degree cannot be transferred. The below explains maximum units to be considered for transfer by program: MDiv - 8 MTS - 4 ThD - 3* additional approval by the director MA - 3 What transfer courses mean on the student record Once transferred, courses cannot be removed from the Duke Divinity record. Grades from approved transferred courses do not appear on Duke Divinity transcripts, nor do they factor into the cumulative GPA of a Duke Divinity program. For master’s programs, transfer credit may not take the place of Duke Divinity curricular requirements (including core courses and limited electives); courses may be transferred for elective credit only. As noted above, candidates seeking advanced placement for core courses should consult with corresponding division chairs (or that individual’s designee), who will determine equivalencies. Should AP be granted, students would still need to take an advanced elective at DDS in the area in question for a letter grade. Credits cannot be transferred until after a student matriculates in the degree program at the Divinity School. An applicant to Duke Divinity School can use the requirements above to review their own transcripts for course viability. CPE units and transfer credit CPE units to be used as transfer credit must be taken at an APCE-accredited CPE program. Units of CPE can only count for academic credit via transfer credit if CPE units is undertaken while a student. One CPE unit equals two Divinity course units. | TRANSFER OF CREDIT | transfer_credit | TRANSFER OF CREDIT Toggle Duke does not offer a preliminary credit evaluation to prospective transfer students. We are unable to connect prospective applicants with an advisor to discuss credit transfer. However, there is a good chance that credits will transfer if coursework taken at the applicant’s current/previous accredited college is comparable to courses offered at Duke in areas such as natural science, math, world language, literature, social sciences and the arts. Duke will grant credit for no more than two years of coursework completed elsewhere, regardless of the number of credits a student has previously earned. In order to earn a Duke degree, a transfer student must spend at least two years at Duke. At least half the courses of all majors, minors, and certificates must be taken at Duke, although individual departments and programs offering majors may require that a greater proportion be taken at Duke. Please see the DUKE UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE BULLETIN for more information on how transfer credits are evaluated. You may find a list of courses offered at Duke by searching our online course catalog . FINANCIAL AID Toggle The number of semesters of aid eligibility for students transferring to Duke is based on the policy of up to nine academic semesters less the number of semesters studied elsewhere. This also includes financial assistance for one summer term, if needed. Duke admits transfer applicants who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, undocumented or DACA students without regard to financial circumstance or aid eligibility and meets 100 percent of each admitted student’s demonstrated need throughout their undergraduate enrollment. Unfortunately, need-based financial aid is not available for international transfer student s. In addition, Duke does not offer merit-based scholarships to transfer students. Application fee waivers are only available for transfer students who are US citizens, permanent residents or undocumented or DACA students. We are unable to provide fee waivers to international transfer students. Transfer application fees may be waived if transfer students are Pell grant eligible. There are four ways to apply for a fee waiver: Sign and submit the NACAC Transfer Fee Waiver Form, or Provide a brief statement attesting to receiving a Pell Grant from your current college. Provide a brief statement describing why you are unable to pay the application fee. Fee waiver requests should be directed to UNDERGRAD-ADMISSIONS@DUKE.EDU .
