PSC 240Political Theory4

meets the Peace Core Humanities requirement Hyperbolic speech from today’s political punditry pervades our world. Well reasoned discourse and debate have given way to screaming and ideological demonizing. As a consequence of this reality, many citizens are turned off by discussions of political issues. Our aim in this course is to restore level-headedness and demonstrate that disagreements over political issues can be discussed in a reasonable fashion (and that we can all remain friends). Specifically, we will explore the exciting realm of Political Theory: the work of various political theorists, the values of differing political ideas, and the application of political theory to real life. Through immersive learning and open dialogue we will come to understand numerous political theories and the important role that they have played in shaping our society. 170 | 2026-27 William Peace University Academic Catalog

PSC 305Campaigns and Elections4

The 2016 presidential campaign was one of the most fascinating in American history. In this course you will learn why that is so not just from the perspective of an observer, citizen, or voter, but from the perspective of an analyst. This course is unique as it offers to students a simulation approach to learning; you get to be the candidate running for office, or the press secretary, the senior advisor, or media journalist as you dive into learning and practicing the skills employed by real-world candidates in running and participating in successful campaigns. Electoral politics is one of the most discussed topics in both academia and in life; this course will help you add to that conversation in a meaningful way.

PSC 341American Political Thought4

Despite its youth, the United States has a rich intellectual tradition within the field of Political Theory. From the concepts forwarded by early Puritan settlers to the revival of the Social Contract by recent scholars, Political Philosophy has maintained an enduring, albeit dynamic, presence in the country. While many Americans possess a cursory knowledge of writings from the founding generation, very few are aware of American political philosophy that either precedes, or is subsequent to, the works of Jefferson, Madison, and Hamilton. This course seeks to remedy this absence of knowledge. Over the course of the semester, students will examine and discuss American Political Thought from the 1600’s through the present all while engaging in exciting immersive learning opportunities that will put such examination into practice.
