UXD 110Introduction to Human-Centered Design4
This course introduces students to the basics of human-centered design, which centers on how the experience of being human informs what makes a usable, useful, and pleasant design. This course serves as the foundation for the rest of the User Experience Design program. Topics include design thinking, affordances/signifiers, stages of action, usability heuristics, user motivations & needs, activity theory, elements of color psychology, giving and receiving feedback, and phenomenology. 204 | 2026-27 William Peace University Academic Catalog
UXD 210User Experience Design I: Process & Methods4
This course offers a hands-on introduction to the processes and methods used by professional UX designers to create user-centered solutions. Students will learn to leverage user research to identify user needs and pain points, develop personas, write problem and need statements, and map user flows and journeys. Students will also learn to practice ideation techniques used by UX design professionals to foster creativity on command. Other topics include communicating “As-Is” and “To-Be” scenarios to highlight a solution’s metrics for success.
This course equips students with the skills to design effective User Interfaces (UI), Design Systems, and Prototypes. Topics include wireframing, layout design, usability- and accessibility-oriented application of visual design principles (type, color, elevation, shadows), and collaborative practices (file handoff, component libraries). Students will also learn the fundamentals of HTML and CSS to better understand how their own work and the design tokens in their design systems will be translated by software developers into fully functional applications, websites, and more. By the end of the course, students will know how to create effective, communicative user interface prototypes at varying levels of fidelity.
UXD 295/395/495: User Experience Design Special Topics1-4
This course will focus on creating prototypes of interactive design projects for real world clients. Content of this course will evolve around current interest within this field. Collaboration projects where students will design interactive media for clients will be created to enhance the student experience. The IL experience here will be several in- depth prototypes in interactive media and collaborative projects.
UXD 310User Experience Design II: User Research & Testing4
Prerequisite or Corequisite: UXD 240 This course centers on the core methods of UX research, guiding students through defining research goals, conducting user interviews, and performing competitor analyses. Students will create personas and problem statements, then rapidly prototype and test their designs to ensure usability and accessibility. They will perform heuristic evaluations, conduct task-based testing, and ensure compliance with WCAG and other accessibility standards. By integrating user feedback, students will iterate and refine their designs to ensure they meet user needs.
This course explores how content and functionality are structured in digital applications. Topics cover content inventory, information grouping, taxonomy development, interaction cost, and how information architecture (IA) informs navigation and UI design. Students will be responsible for creating sitemaps, developing taxonomies, conducting card sorting exercises, prototyping informed by IA principles, and translating content hierarchy into visual hierarchy.
This course will build onto the work done in UXD-410 User Experience Design III: Collaborative Design and Presentation, contributing to the development of a complete and substantial project to be included in UXD students’ portfolios. Coursework will also include professional preparation such as development of professional portfolios and practice for UX interviews and design tests.
