An examination of the founding, structure, and operations of the United States government and the corresponding political processes and dynamics, with special emphasis on the rights and responsibilities of US citizens and residents. Both semesters.

Special emphasis is given to the ways the legal system, the Constitution, and the Supreme Court have influenced and been influenced by social, ideological, political, and economic factors. An evaluation of the intellectual foundations and character of the American regime. The class considers the major historical events, intellectual themes, and ideas that have informed and shaped American republicanism. First semester.
A course that examines the principles and practices of clear and concise writing to inform and persuade a target public affairs audience. First semester.
An examination of the speeches, actions, and leadership of outstanding statesmen and stateswomen. Studying their personal biographies and key events that shaped attitudes and approaches to leadership, the course also explores examples of leaders who made wise decisions in difficult situations.
