This course introduces the process of literacy acquisition in the primary grades, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. We will investigate the theory, research, and practical application of best practices impacting literacy development. Theories and strategies to support early childhood students’ language and phonemic development, word study, automaticity, and fluency will be studied and applied to the planning and implementation of learning experiences for readers. We will explore the use of literature in relationship to the development of reading and literacy skills, identifying and selecting diverse titles to use when planning for reading experiences.
