This course provides students interested in pursuing health careers basic concepts of various healthcare professions. The course focuses on healthcare systems, trends, careers, and preparation for the workforce. Additionally, students are exposed to activities that serve to improve their college-level writing and speaking abilities. Prerequisite: HSC Major
This course is designed to introduce the student to the basic principles of medical terminology. The focus is on the construction of words using prefixes, suffixes and word roots and their application. Proper spelling, pronunciation, usage and comprehension will be emphasized using a body-systems approach. Additional terminology focus areas will include pathology, pharmacology, medical abbreviations and clinical conditions.
This course presents basic information concerning the care of the body and community and common departures from health while aging. The problems and practices involved in the improvement of individual, community and environmental health will be explored. This class will also include broad observations of personal health including the expected mental and physical aging process, health disparities, and the preventative practices involved in healthy aging.
This course introduces the field of health promotion and examines its relationship to other disciplines in practical, theoretical, and historical contexts. This course explores the causes of stress and its mental and physical impact on the body. With student-focused content, we will discuss issues relating to one’s daily lives such as academic stress, first-generation challenges, time management, financial issues, etc. Students will learn about the stressors in their lives and how they can best manage them. Students will also have the opportunity to practice and employ stress management techniques to become healthier and live a more fulfilling and satisfying life. Prerequisite: HSC 1030
This course is designed to expand students' worldviews and explore cultural diversity and ethics among health-care client relationships. Students will first examine their personal inherent biases and topics not limited to stereotypes, discrimination, generalizations, and racism. Students will examine cultural similarities and differences that influence health status by studying various ethno-cultural groups. This course introduces the basic principles of human nutrition. Topics will include: nature and function of macronutrients and micronutrients; digestion; food labels and claims; optimal nutrition; and energy transformations. This course provides foundational information on prevention and care of athletic injuries. Emphasis placed on orthopedic injury description, prevention and treatment. The primary goal of the course is to develop and enhance students' knowledge and understanding of concepts and techniques of coaching and their application to achieving important objectives in working with athletes.
