Part of the course is devoted to a survey of the fundamentals of music. Major developments in the music of the Western world from the Middle Ages to our own time are traced, with special attention being given to the different styles of music developed in the United States.

(Fall Only) This course will teach the basics of music theory along with data-driven techniques that help drive consumer engagement. Students will gain experience using the librosa Python library for Music Information Retrieval and other common statistical analysis tools in Python. Students will also learn the practical music terminology necessary to perform data analysis in the music industry. The course is largely lecture-based in the first half, transitioning to project-based once the foundational knowledge has been laid.
